Activision May Be Working On Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 & 2 Remakes

A few of the classic entries in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series might be making a comeback, as there are rumors that remakes of the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and THPS2 are being worked on by Activision. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater first appeared on the original PlayStation in 1999 and it quickly spawned a franchise which has has appeared on almost every platform.

The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series was adored for its skill-based trick system which required the player to perform combos using the elements within each stage, as well as for having some of the most memorable soundtracks in video game history. As time went on, the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series fell out of favor with both critics and fans alike, to the point where the entries started to dry up altogether. The most recent game in the series was Tony Hawk's Skate Jam for mobile phones, though this received a mixed critical reception due to its poor control scheme.

It's possible remakes of the first two Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games are being made for Activision. A prominent leaker on Twitter named Sabi is reporting that their contact within Activision has told them prototype versions of both remakes have been circulated within the company. It's unclear whether these remakes have been given the go-ahead or if the concept is just being tested out. There are surely fans who want more Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games, but Activision might be careful about giving the projects the green light.

It's understandable why Activision might be wary of remaking the first two Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games, due to the reception their previous remake received when it was released in 2012. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD was a game which contained levels from the first two games in the series, but was met with a mixed response from critics and would go on to be de-listed from all digital storefronts in 2017, most likely due to licensing issues regarding its soundtrack.

The pro skateboarding video game genre slowly died out over time, to the point where game developer EA nearly gave up the trademark for Skate. It feels as if the genre might have gone the way of Guitar Hero, but it's possible there might be a nostalgia boom for the old Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games if the remakes can reclaim their old magic. Tony Hawk himself has said Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is his favorite game in the series, and there are many fans who would absolutely agree, so there could still be an audience out there who is hungry for more skateboarding action while Bad Religion plays in the background.
