3D games took off nearly 20 years ago, leaving 2D side-scrollers with a tiny niche in the gaming universe. The developers behind the original La-Mulana want to find out what would have happened if 3D never was by creating La-Mulana 2. This direct sequel to the cult hit is already in development, and the team is currently seeking cash on Kickstarter. Judging by the early response, it’s probably going to get MUCH more than it needs.
La-Mulana was originally developed by Nigoro as freeware in 2006, then remastered a few years later for WiiWare and eventually PC. It’s a side-scrolling adventure game of archeological exploration — sort of like Indiana Jones meets Castlevania. Along with the tight platforming gameplay are clever puzzles and riddles. La-Mulana 2 is aiming to be a similar PC title, but bigger and prettier.

La-Mulana 2 will come with 18 distinct areas, at least 9 boss battles, and over 40 mini-bosses. Regular enemy monsters will number at least 70 at release, but possibly closer to 100 when the game is done. The soundtrack, which you can get as part of the Kickstarter campaign, will have 50 tracks. The developers have prototypes of the game running, but they need money to finish it up.
The Kickstarter page set a goal of $200,000, but it is going to rocket past that in no time. The campaign was nearly halfway there in a day, but Nigoro probably isn’t surprised — the stretch goals are pretty extensive, going as high as $2.7 million.

This game is likely going to earn a huge amount of money in the next month, and you can get your own copy for $15. Sound good? Well, calm yourself a bit — La-Mulana 2 isn’t expected to be done until December of 2015.
