Knights of Light is a medieval action RPG set in 7th century Iraq.

Developed by Egyptian studio Rumbling Games, Knights of Light is centred around the Islamic conquests of 636, particularly the clash between Muslim armies and the Sasanian Empire, which ended in the latter’s collapse.

The Sasanian Empire ruled Persia (modern-day Iran, and Iraq) and Knights of Light tells the story of several unnamed historical figures who played a role in the Battle of al-Qādisiyyah and other skirmishes of that era.

The plan is create the entirety of Iraq in the game, and Rumbling Games is looking to The Witcher series for inspiration in how it handled authentic real-world problems without compromising mythical elements. The studio promises a 60-hour campaign and plans to release Knights of Light on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

The pre-alpha gameplay demo below provides our best look at the game’s combat. The developer’s YouTube channel has a few more videos that showcase the game world, and the motion capture process.

It’s definitely still early days, but nonetheless impressive considering it comes out of a fledgling development scene in Egypt. Outside of putting out smaller mobile releases that start out as game jam ideas, the development community in the country hasn’t yet taken a recognisable form.

Knights of Light does not yet have a release date.
