Movies based on video game properties tend to fail in terms of quality and fan impact, but it seems that a team led by J.J. Abrams is still working on bringing both Portal and Half-Life to the big screen in the coming years, although no new concrete information about the two projects is available.

IGN quotes the producer and director as saying that new details might not arrive too soon but that "they're in development. And we've got writers, and we're working on both those stories. But nothing that would be an exciting update."
Both Portal and Half-Life were first revealed in 2013, but Abrams is at the moment focused on the future of the Star Wars franchise, although he is no longer directing the coming installments in the massive movie series.
Since both the video games were launched, a number of fans have used their resources to create short films based on them, some of which are impressive when it comes to visuals and story.
One of those fans was Dan Trachtenberg, who came up with the No Escape Portal experience and has since then worked with J.J. Abrams to create the new Cloverfield movie.
The producer has also been saying that he plans to create a video game with Valve, although no concrete plans were announced, and his Bad Robot studio is working with Chair Entertainment on a new project and is also investing resources in an action strategy mix called Spyjinx.
Valve is not currently working on new Portal of Half-Life titles Fans have been asking for new entries in both franchises for a long time, but the studio led by Gabe Newell has not been talking about its plans for the future and seems currently focused on other types of experiences and the Steam digital distribution platform.
A game called The Lab, which takes place in the Portal universe, is being created for the Vive virtual reality device and will be launched during the fall, allowing players to take part in some experiments that will show off the core features of the VR platform.
The expectations for a new Half-Life video game are so high that it's almost impossible for the team at Valve to deliver a mix of story and mechanics that can satisfy all fans of the series.
Portal is easier to explore from different angles and even using a new cast of characters or core gameplay, but the development team in charge of it has not announced plans for a new title.
