World War Z has just become another title to adopt crossplay between consoles and PC via a free update. The game continues the latest trend of enabling crossplay support in multiplatform titles with another recent example being Dead by Daylight.

World War Z is a video game adaptation of an eponymous movie starring Brad Pitt. The title follows in Left 4 Dead’s footsteps gameplay-wise offering a very similar experience with hordes of zombies and 4-player co-op action. The major exception, though, is the camera perspective as World War Z belongs to the TPS genre. Zombies’ behavior is also slightly different as the walking dead can pile up in huge quantities much like they did in the movie. The game was originally off to a good start with a welcoming reception from the community. In just a single month after the release, World War Z sold nearly 2 million copies. This May, World War Z was treated with a Game of the Year Edition, and now, the game is finally entering the crossplay era.

Focus Home Interactive has launched a free Dronemaster update for World War Z effectively enabling crossplay support between the three versions of the game. Regardless of whether players own a copy for PC, PS4, or Xbox One, they can now all join the same matchmaking pool and team up to escape zombie apocalypse back to back. It is worth noting that the crossplay feature was previously available in the game between PC and Xbox One only while Sony remained defensive towards its gaming audience on PS4. Luckily, the times have changed, and now World War Z community is united as one. Although crossplay sounds like the fundamental premise of the Dronemaster update, there’s actually some new content for World War Z with the most exciting piece being the Dronemaster playable character class. This new hero is equipped with an upgradable drone capable of stunning nearby zombies and buffing allies.

Another piece of free content is a new rare weapon ACW-20, which has also been treated with a separate upgrade tree. As a semi-automatic grenade launcher, the newest addition to the World War Z’s arsenal should favor the playstyle of those gamers who fancy being at the frontline. Obviously, Saber Interactive has gone for some required changes to the game’s balance and overall ecosystem introducing several fixes and improvements. Additionally, a new paid DLC titled Signature Weapons Pack has launched alongside the free update to accompany the content drop with a total of four premium weapon skins.

Judging by the pace at which the industry is introducing crossplay support to multiplatform titles, it is a fair assumption that the feature might become a must in future releases. There’re clearly very few - if any at all - benefits for gaming audiences staying separate, whereas uniting players on consoles and PC feels like a natural evolution. The example of World War Z shows that development companies are listening to their communities, and hopefully, the days of scattered gaming audiences are finally over.
