Microsoft shares a simple method through which Xbox One owners can make their own custom background for the new home console using an image they store on a USB stick or on a local device via DLNA.

The Xbox One came out last November, and despite a not that impressive start, the console has slowly but surely sold quite a few million units. Thanks to monthly updates from Microsoft for the device's firmware, things are getting better and better.

The next big software update for the Xbox One is set to debut in November and a beta version of the build is already rolling out for participants in the Xbox Live Preview program.

Besides including all sorts of long-awaited features for the actual console as well as for its SmartGlass technology and other such things, the firmware allows owners of the console to set their own background for the main menu of the device.

A guide to setting a custom Xbox One background is available

In order to show how fans can set their own image as the background, a small guide has just been shared by Microsoft's Jeff Rubenstein on the Major Nelson blog.

Before kicking off the process, the representative warns that an updated Media Player application is needed, and in some cases, Xbox One owners have to uninstall and then reinstall the app so that the latest version is available.

First up, a USB stick or a DLNA source must be connected to the Xbox One and then, by using the Media Player, people need to navigate to the specific folder and file that they want as a background. Bear in mind that only JPG and PNG files can be used, at least right now.

Once you're viewing the image in full screen, you can hit the menu button and select the "Set as background" option to see it applied to the menu of the Xbox One.

The procedure works only for Xbox Live Preview participants

Bear in mind that the process is available only to those who are running the beta Xbox One firmware update and the new version of the Media Player applications. Once the new Xbox One software update goes live next month, all owners of the console will be able to use the aforementioned procedure to set their own menu backgrounds.

Don't forget that you can also pick between various colors as well as from achievement artwork for your background, in case you can't settle on your own image.
