The development team at Bungie announces that it will be taking its very popular social shooter Destiny offline tomorrow in order to update the server infrastructure associated with the game to the point where it can deal with a number of game updates that will be launched in the coming weeks.

The official announcement on the site of the game suggests that the planned downtime will not last long and says that the maintenance will be starting at around 8 AM Pacific Time and should be complete in about four hours, as long as everything goes according to plan.

Bungie adds, “Once services are restored, your experience as a player will be unchanged. The updates we’re making will be on our side, so you won’t need to download or install a new batch of content. This work will help us pave the way for the progress that was foretold in the last Weekly Update.”

The studio explains that, while many gamers may be unhappy that they won’t be able to access Destiny for a four-hour period, the maintenance is necessary because it will enable the team to actually deliver all the game changes that the community has been asking for.

Destiny is a game with a ten-year life plan

It’s unclear when the first of the promised big updates for Destiny will be launched or exactly what it will contain, but the developers have already said that they want to analyze all player concerns and tweak the game in order to solve them.

The patches are being delivered for free just as Bungie continues to put the finishing touches on the first full expansion for the social shooter, called The Dark Below, which is set to be offered on December 9 on all platforms on which the title is available.

The new content will include a new level cap, more enemies for gamers to face and areas to explore, and there are also two new Raids for high-level players that are filled with some cool rewards.

Bungie has said since Destiny was first revealed that it is creating an universe that will exist for a ten-year period, which means that it’s important to deliver constant updates in order to tweak the core mechanics while also offering new content for gamers to explore.

Rumors are also suggesting that a full sequel might be already in the works and might be offered in 2016.
