George R.R. Martin recently made a comment that could confirm rumors that he is collaborating with FromSoftware on a video game. Rumors began several weeks ago that Martin was working on a game with FromSoftware similar to the Souls franchise and that the title would be an open-world game with various kingdoms.

FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki, who created the Souls franchise, recently confirmed that the company has two unannounced titles in development in addition to Dark Souls Remastered and Metal Wolf Chaos XD. A collaboration with someone like Martin would undoubtedly provide for an ambitious project for the studio, especially considering Martin's penchant for storytelling in massive worlds with a variety of characters. The company has seen some success with its recent release, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which scored praise from both reviewers and gamers alike.

In a blog post about the end of Game of Thrones, Martin wrote that he has "consulted on a video game out of Japan," which could confirm the rumors about his collaboration with FromSoftware. Gematsu reports that this is likely a project at FromSoftware internally referred to as "GR" that has been in development for around three years. However, few details exist about the project, although reports state that it is an open world title that will include horse riding and will be published by Bandai Namco.

So is this new title potentially the next installment in the Souls franchise? Given Martin's penchant for dark storytelling in dragon-inhabited worlds that seem bleak, his writing style, even if it's in a simple consulting role, would fit the kind of world-building that FromSoftware is known for. Dark Souls III broke sales records for Bandai Namco, so it is likely that FromSoftware is working on another title in the franchise. However, Martin's involvement could be for a new game, too. FromSoftware pushed the boundaries with Sekiro and may continue to do so with its next IP. The good news is that reports suggest that fans will learn more at Microsoft's E3 2019 presentation.

Of course, this means that Martin has spent even more time away from the world of Westeros as he struggles to write the next book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, which inspired HBO's Game of Thrones. However, his collaboration with FromSoftware should please fans who would like to see his unique brand of epic storytelling make its way to video games.
