We’d been waiting some time to EA’s take on battle royale with Firestorm in Battlefield V, but we got the mode much more suddenly with surprise release of Apex Legends. You might wonder if the publisher is about to be competing against itself with two battle royales on the market, but EA is confident that the experiences will offer different experiences for different types of players.

“We think that these, while they sit inside the battle royale kind of genre, are two very different types of experiences,” CEO Andrew Wilson tells investors during an earnings call. “What we have seen is the community who want to play these types of games, it’s hundreds of millions of people strong.”

The Firestorm release date isn’t expected at least until March, but that still not a whole lot of separation between it and Apex Legends. (And while it’s certainly not in the same genre, the Anthem release date comes right between the two to add a third EA-supported live service in the mix.) Wilson believes the battle royales are distinct enough to coexist.

In contrast to the “fast-paced play” of Apex Legends, Firestorm will have more “strategic play and “vehicle play,” and Wilson says “the things that are unique to a Battlefield battle royale mode will offer a differentiation of play for a different part of that community.”

Wilson does allow that “at some level, there may also be some crossover. But given the size of the community, given the very different types of game play even inside the battle royale genre, we believe those two modes can fit very well together in the community.”

You can read those comments in full through EA’s transcript of the call, as noted by Dexerto. This financial report also brought to light EA’s big expectations for Anthem sales, and continued impressive stats around The Sims 4 player count. Apex Legends already appears to be a hit, but EA seems intent on keeping plenty of irons in the fire – how many of them will stay hot remains to be seen.
