A new underwater location in Fortnite has been leaked by data miners, but it won't be available to visit until close to the end of Chapter 2 Season 3. This location is a brand new named Point of Interest (POI) that will be revealed once the water has drained from the map and - according to the leak - is called The Ruins.

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 3 started with the map being flooded after The Device event that ended Season 2. The flood left a large portion of the map covered in water, introducing a few new POIs and changed the landscape of some returning locations. Whether players have noticed it or not, the water has been receding over time granting more access to more and more dry (or at least just damp) land. At the beginning of Season 3, it was announced that players would gain access to new locations and vehicles as the water levels return to normal. This includes the return of old POI's as well as The Ruins.

According to an article published by Eurogamer, data miners were able to dig up this new POI from the code of a recently released patch. Today, July 1, marked the first drastic change to Fortnite's water level after the patch was released. Along with the first water level change, the end-of-season map was found buried away in the patch's files. The final map revealed that the map would mostly return to the way it was before the flood, but not without the addition of The Ruins.

A season of Fortnite lasts an average of 10 weeks. Today marks the start of week 3 of Season 3 which started on June 17. Between now and August 26, the water levels in Fortnite will continue to lower giving players access to more land. According to data miners, The Ruins are speculated to not be available for players to explore until close to the end of the season. Seeing as The Ruins are located at the top left corner of the map, and is seemingly below even the normal sea level, it makes sense that this new POI would not be accessible until the water completely recedes.

That being said, The Ruins could tie into Season 3's storyline, or it could be a key location that leads into Season 4. New locations are often revealed that relate to that season's overarching story, but they are also used to tease of story and gameplay developments to come. While the storyline for Season 3 still remains slightly obscured, The Ruins could provide information crucial to understanding just what's going on in Fortnite Season 3. Until the tides turn, players will have to keep waiting to get a closer look at The Ruins.
