GoldenEye 007 and Mario have just met thanks to a new mod for the title, which has been celebrated with a spectacular trailer. When it comes to classic console first-person shooters, it’s hard to look past Rare’s classic, which set a high benchmark for how the genre could thrive after its foundation in computer gaming. What’s more, it also proved that not all video game tie-ins for other works had to be rushed and disappointing releases, with GoldenEye 007 instead going down as one of the best games on the Nintendo 64.

Even though times have changed, with FPS titles such as Halo and Call of Duty going on to shape the console shooter landscape, GoldenEye 007‘s legacy is one that remains untouched. The title is still one of the best games to bring out at a party, and that’s not something to be sniffed at given that it’s been over 20 years since its release.

Of course, no game is perfect, but that’s why GoldenEye 007‘s dedicated modding community exists. One recent mod over at GoldenEye Vault shows the amazing things that modders can achieve, by bringing a variety of Mario characters into the game. Even better, a trailer for the mod shows just how impressive this feat is, and can be seen below.

The mod, from user StupidMarioBros1Fan, has made big changes to the game in both single player and multiplayer modes. The single player campaign of GoldenEye 007 has seen a major skin reworking, with Mario himself taking on the role of James Bond, Peach becoming Natayla Simonova, and enemy soldiers becoming Koopa Troopers. There are also a few story tweaks along the way to make it a little more Mario-esque.

The game’s multiplayer has also seen some major changes, and it’s enough to give Nintendo 64 fans dreams of what might have been. The multiplayer characters of GoldenEye 007 have been swapped out for Mario and company, with everyone’s most hated character Oddjob now Toad and others reprising their roles from the single player, such as Arkady Ourumov being replaced by Bowser. On top of that, the mod even has some Mario-themed maps alongside the originals.

Classic Nintendo 64 games such as GoldenEye 007 still have strong modding communities, with one other example being Mario 64. The 3D platformer has seen a number of great mods over the years, with one fantastic example being the 24 player Mario 64 multiplayer mod that hit back in September. When all it takes is getting hold of some ROMs, it’s a great way to see reimagined versions of some of the great titles of gaming’s past.
