The team at Square Enix in charge of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is at the moment investigating a slew of denial of services attacks which are targeting the MMO and causing plenty of login trouble to all the gamers currently involved with it.

The company says that an anonymous third party has been launching the strikes, which means either that there are no details about the identity of the attackers or that it’s better at the moment for it to be kept hidden for further investigation.

In a site update which is set to offer more details in the future, Square Enix claims that “However with the attack we are currently experiencing, only a massive number of access attempts are being made to the server where both character data and personal information of our customers are not in danger of being exposed.”

It’s unclear why an entity would be ready to use resources to attack Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn only to cause login difficulties, instead of trying to get access to data that can then be sold to other law breaking groups.

Square Enix is at the moment trying to update its infrastructure so that it can withstand the DDoS attacks, but the company seems to suggest that gamers will have to deal with the login problems for a while longer.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has become a successful MMO

Square Enix is at the moment focused on keeping Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn as safe as possible because the game has become one of the most solid revenue streams for the publisher.

The first incarnation of the MMO was plagued by plenty of bugs and was never a hit with gamers, but the company said that it was committed to show that the core structure was a solid one by recreating it under the Realm Reborn moniker.

At the moment, special events and content drops are used to keep player interest in the game high, and there have been rumors that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will get at least one major expansion before resources are allocated to other projects.

Square Enix is also working on an entirely new Final Fantasy XV, which will be launched in either 2015 or 2016 on the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Xbox One from Microsoft, with a new story and a set of innovative gameplay features.
