The first Far Cry 6 screenshots are out, showing a glimpse of its characters and the tropical setting of Yara, and they look incredible. Far Cry 6 was recently revealed by Ubisoft and is planned for a release next year.

Even before Far Cry 6 was announced, its existence was hinted at by an unexpected source. Giancarlo Esposito, the actor who played Gus Fring on Breaking Bad, revealed that he had done work on a major video game earlier in the year, and his great track record for playing villains immediately led people to guess that that game was Far Cry 6. After a leaked trailer let the cat out of the bag, Ubisoft confirmed that Esposito was in fact playing the villain of Far Cry 6 before officially revealing it at its Ubisoft Forward games showcase.

Now that Ubisoft has officially acknowledged Far Cry 6, it’s not wasting any time giving players a look at what they’ll be up against when the game releases next February. Along with two cinematic trailers, Ubisoft has released a set of screenshots of the next-gen game, and they look like a massive leap in visual quality from previous games in the already gorgeous franchise. Among the first batch of screenshots are stunning renders of the game’s main characters and a breathtaking city erupting in violence against its authoritarian rulers, along with a few shots from the player’s perspective showing a couple of the game’s unique modified weapons. Ubisoft didn’t specify what platform the screenshots were taken from.

Although there’s little more than a few quick looks at Far Cry 6 floating around at this point, they’ve given fans a lot of information about the upcoming game. For instance, the Far Cry 6 Collector’s Edition has already been revealed, which includes a replica of a flamethrower that will likely see a lot of use in the game. Then there’s the early fan theory that Far Cry 6 is a prequel to Far Cry 3 and that the child shown in the trailer is actually that game’s villain, Vaas.

Fans still have about half a year to wait for Far Cry 6, but it will be a packed few months in video games. By the time it comes out, both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will have launched, with Far Cry 6 following soon after as one of the first AAA releases of the next generation. Judging from its new screenshots, it may also be the first to demonstrate the real power of the new consoles as well.
