Fallout 4 developer Bethesda confirms that the new iteration of the VATS mechanic in the new RPG is a bit more dynamic, as it no longer slows down time, and no longer features random critical hits. Instead, players can assign their crits when in the mode.

Fallout 4 was finally revealed by Bethesda earlier this year and, at last month's E3 2015, the large publisher and developer shared all sorts of different videos, screenshots, and details about the post-apocalyptic role-playing game.

Among the most interesting enhancements brought by Fallout 4 over its past iterations is the revamped VATS (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System), which changes a few elements from the previous games.
Fallout 4's VATS is more dynamic and brings more options

According to the game's Director, Todd Howard, who talks with the Telegraph, the new system is more dynamic but still allows players to make strategic decisions in the heat of combat.

Instead of completely freezing time, VATS now makes it move more slowly and the percentages for hitting certain body parts on enemies change as they move around. Another big change is that the critical shots can now be manually assigned, instead of being completely random.

"We found some ways to make it a bit, not a ton, but a bit more dynamic," Howard says. "It’s very, very slow and you’ll see the percentages change because the person is moving behind or coming out of a wall. So queuing up the shot at the right time matters. And while the playback is happening, the criticals are not random, you assign which shot is the critical one and you load up that bar. So it’s a little bit more under your control, not a lot, but just enough to make it feel better."

Howard also emphasizes that the shooter portion will be more polished in the new game and that skilled players can certainly rely on their own abilities instead of pouring many points and perks into the specialized areas.

Fallout 4 launches in November on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
