Reportedly, FromSoftware has entered the polishing phase for its next big title Elden Ring, which, according to a rumor, has been in production for upwards of four years. After months of rumors and speculation, the studio announced Elden Ring during E3 2019, confirming that Game of Thrones novelist George R.R. Martin did take part in conceptualizing the world and lore.

Though bits of information have surfaced piecemeal in the last year and a half, concrete details largely remain scarce. While hopes were high that an official gameplay trailer would go live during The Game Awards 2020 earlier this month, FromSoftware revealed no such footage during the show. However, VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb recently alleged that a trailer for Elden Ring should arrive sometime in the next month or two. If the latest rumor surrounding the title proves true, the public may indeed get a closer look at FromSoftware's next opus sooner rather than later.

In a recent interview with YouTuber CyberLuk (via Wccftech), Italian journalist Francesco Fossetti - an editor for Everyeye - claimed FromSoftware finished core development on Elden Ring months ago. If it weren't for the global pandemic, Fossetti continued, the project would've already hit store shelves. During the discussion, the journalist said Elden Ring now sits in the polishing phase of production, following a supposed four-year development cycle. He then suggested that players can expect an experience similar to FromSoftware's flagship property, Dark Souls.

In the past, Fossetti has proven a reliable source of insider information. As noted by Wccftech, the Everyeye editor correctly revealed that FromSoftware's latest would not appear on The Game Awards 2020 stage. Still, these new details from Fossetti, as with all rumors and speculation, should be taken with a grain of salt for now.

The journalist's words at least seem in line with what Xbox boss Phil Spencer told GameSpot in an interview last month. According to Spencer, Elden Ring is playable and counts as "the most ambitious game that [Miyazaki's] done." With regards to Fossetti's statement about the new title's being very similar to Dark Souls, that much hardly comes as a surprise. Since the release of Demon's Souls in 2009, FromSoftware games from Bloodborne to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice have more or less followed a similar formula. How the studio may switch things up this time around should be interesting to see, though.

As of writing, FromSoftware has yet to confirm a release date for Elden Ring.
