A Dragon Ball Z mobile game has reached a serious marker when it comes to financial returns, with Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle hitting $1 billion in revenue since its launch. The title is a mobile fighting game based on the acclaimed series, and has been becoming something of a mobile app phenomenon.

It's easy to see why the game would pick up an audience, of course. Dragon Ball Z is one of the defining properties in the worlds of both manga and anime, even if the creator of Dragon Ball doesn't quite understand how it became so popular. Over the years, the Dragon Ball franchise (and Dragon Ball Z in particular) has had a wealth of popular spin-offs, with a new Dragon Ball Super movie arriving next year.

Although it might not immediately spring to mind, Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle has become a major success story for Dragon Ball Z as well. As reported by Sensor Tower, the mobile fighting game has now earned $1 billion from its player base since its launch two years ago. That's a huge amount for any game, and shows just how important the mobile game market has become for properties after a variety of video game spin-offs.

In terms of the breakdown of that revenue, the majority of the $1 billion has come from Japan, with around 60% of the monies earned coming from Japanese players. The second largest group is players from the United States, which accounts for 20% of the total revenue. The $1 billion was split fairly evenly between platform, with a 54-46 split in favor of the App Store over Google Play.

Something that shows the longevity of Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle is that it's still in a pretty good position in the rankings for mobile. For the second quarter of the year, the title came in at number eleven for the highest grossing mobile games. This success even followed through to June, where Dokkan Battle was placed at number 25 for global player spending, only a few spaces behind the more recent Dragon Ball Legends.

It's not just mobile games that are doing well for Dragon Ball Z at the minute, either. Dragon Ball FighterZ has also been a standout success, and is already the fourth best-selling video game in the series. Between the mobile and traditional gaming markets, there's still clearly lots of love for Dragon Ball Z video games.
