DOOM Eternal Finally Gets Nintendo Switch Release Date, Coming Next Week

Hell is coming to Nintendo platforms very soon, with DOOM Eternal finally receiving a December 8, 2020 release date for the Nintendo Switch. This particular version of the first-person shooter has been a long time coming, but at least the wait is nearly at an end.

When DOOM Eternal was first delayed out its original fall 2019 launch date to March 2020, developer id Software and publisher Bethesda Softworks would only confirm that a Switch version was on track to roll out "after the other platforms." Clearly, months have passed since the PC, PS4, and Xbox One one iterations of the latest DOOM entry hit retail and digital storefronts. And, apart from id's reassurance that the project was still in the works, much of that time has come and gone with relative silence about the Switch SKU. However, one noteworthy piece of news made the rounds nearly two weeks ago - the Switch port in question will only launch digitally.

At the very least, the shooter's Nintendo Switch release is imminent. Come December 8, players will get to experience all of DOOM Eternal's high-octane ultraviolence in a new, portable way. Nintendo and Bethesda shared the news earlier this morning, complete with a new trailer that is sure to excite Switch players who have been patiently awaiting the forthcoming launch.

Since this is a digital-only release, players can either buy the title via Nintendo eShop or through digital codes from retail stores. Preorders are currently live, but some fans may experience instances wherein previous preorders are cancelled. Should such inconveniences occur, Bethesda advises customers to contact their retailers for further instructions.

Fans based in North America will gain access to preorder bonuses that include the "Rip & Tear" content and DOOM 64. According to Bethesda, "Rip & Tear" will be automatically downloaded and applied to the game. Meanwhile, DOOM 64 should come in the form of an eShop download code that's automatically sent to whichever email is associated with the Nintendo Account responsible for the DOOM Eternal purchase.

Though the upcoming release is indeed exciting news, there are still a few questions that linger. Most notably, id and Bethesda have yet to confirm when The Ancient Gods: Part One DLC is slated to arrive on Nintendo's hardware. As of writing, the companies are only noting that this particular batch of content will roll out "at a later date." Thus, it remains unclear as to whether Part Two is planned to launch day-and-date with the other versions. As of writing, Part Two on PC, PS4, and Xbox One also lacks a firm release date.

DOOM Eternal is available on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia, and it will launch for Nintendo Switch on December 8, 2020.
