Dead Island 2, the upcoming first-person melee-focused zombie basher from Yager, has a beta test scheduled sometime later, and apparently PlayStation 4 owners will get an extra 30 days of access.

The news comes from the game's official FAQ on the Dead Island 2 beta website, informing gamers that opting for PS4 as their platform of choice will earn them extra game time, ahead of Xbox One and PC users.

Players who have already selected PC or Xbox One as their platforms have the choice to change their platform by entering the original code, found on the bottom of their Escape Dead Island receipt, and then submitting the form along with their newly selected system.

For the time being, there is no timeline for the beta, the only information available being that those eligible will be notified two weeks prior to its kick-off.

Access to the upcoming Dead Island 2 beta was offered as a pre-order bonus for early adopters of Escape Dead Island, the survival mystery game released at the end of November.

A lot of Dead Islands

The original developers of Dead Island, Techland, are currently working on a spiritual successor of sorts, Dying Light, which, with its intriguing interactions and parkour-infused action sequences, seems to be a definite contender for Dead Island 2. Techland is also working on a first-person hack-and-slash video game, Hellraid, reminiscent of the old Heretic and Hexen titles from the '90s.

The first entry in the series was praised for its cool mechanics and solid melee combat system but was criticized for its bad story, for being essentially a series of fetch quests tied to each other, and for a lot of technical issues.

Yager Developments are the makers of the lauded Spec Ops: The Line, a game that took all other military shooters to school by focusing on the toll such inhuman events take on the human psyche, rather than on the glory of shooting hundreds of faceless, nameless adversaries.

Fortunately, they picked up the development reins for Dead Island 2, and judging from the hilarious launch trailer (attached below) and the gameplay bits (scroll down) revealed so far, it's going to be a blast.

Instead of showing the usual story of a harrowed group of unlikely survivors doing their best to stay alive in the testing zombie apocalypse scenario, the upcoming game shows the story of individuals who discovered a new purpose in life, putting their newfound zombie-killing talents to good use all across California.

Dead Island 2 is expected out sometime in April 2015, headed to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC platforms.
