The development team at Blizzard first announced that it was working on a new project called Overwatch during the recent BlizzCon event and now the studio is ready to offer a closer look at the official artwork for each of the included characters, which served as inspiration for the way they will look in action.

The images are very cool-looking and suggest the wide variety of mechanics associated with the characters, and gamers who want to get full details on each of the fighters can check out the official site of the experience.

The official artwork for Overwatch is also interesting because it shows the wide array of influences that Blizzard has used in order to create its cast and reveals that the company is not afraid of using familiar archetypes in order to make sure that gamers have familiar faces to choose from when they first start the shooter.

At the same time, the reveal is designed to address criticism that many of the concepts used are very close to titles which are already available, like Team Fortress 2.

Blizzard has said that it plans to offer more details on its coming shooter soon and that a beta will be offered for a limited number of fans in 2015 in order to test out the core mechanics, although it’s unclear if all the characters will be included.

Overwatch is a free-to-play and team-based experience which will encourage gamers to find a role that they like and to then work with their buddies in order to reach objectives while battling waves of enemies.

Overwatch and the remains of Titan

The reveal of Overwatch was a big surprise for all fans of Blizzard, and since it was first shown, rumors have emerged explaining that the title was built from the remains of the Titan MMO project, which Blizzard canceled earlier in the year without allowing gamers to take a look at its core mechanics.

Apparently, the experience was very complex and incorporated a wide number of mechanics, some of which have been repurposed for the new project.

Overwatch will probably be launched at some point in 2016 and it will be interesting to see whether the title will manage to disrupt another game genre for Blizzard.

Until then, the company is focused on making sure that the Warlords of Draenor expansion for World of Warcraft performs well and on the development of the card-based Hearthstone.
