Bethesda made headlines last month when they announced plans to host its first ever E3 showcase in June. The news was a huge surprise for many in the gaming industry, and caused many to speculate about the possible reasons for the decision – including the possibility of a new Fallout game.

However, just because Bethesda is holding its first showcase at E3 doesn’t mean the publisher can’t still reveal new games and exciting news in the meantime – and that’s exactly what they’ve done. Bethesda today revealed a new chapter in the Wolfenstein world by way of a standalone prequel to last year’s hit shooter, Wolfenstein: The New Order.

The new game, called Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, once more pits players against an overwhelming Nazi force during World War II. B.J. Blazkowicz will once again be the game’s primary protagonist and Nazi killer, as players make their way through two new missions. The first mission takes place at Castle Wolfenstein, where players will take on a “maniacal prison warden.” Then, it’s off to the city of Wulfburg, where an “obsessed Nazi archaeologist is exhuming mysterious artifacts that threaten to unleash a dark and ancient power.”

After the huge success of last year’s entry in the Wolfenstein series, it’s no surprise that publisher Bethesda and developer MachineGames were anxious to offer more Nazi-blasting action to gamers. Jerk Gustafsson, a producer with Bethesda, offered his take on creating Wolfenstein: The Old Blood:

“Diving back into the world of Wolfenstein has really been fun for us. We’ve enjoyed exploring the events leading up to The New Order. We think fans will really enjoy the story, all the action and, of course, jumping back into the combat with new weapons.”

Even though Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is only a couple missions long, it’ll be hard to pass up the opportunity to take on hordes of Nazi’s with both new and familiar weapons. Based on the above video, it looks like one of those weapons is a water pipe, but not just any pipe. In true Wolfenstein fashion, the pipe comes apart, allowing players to stab enemies with a sharp metal stake, then pound in the stake for extra gore. Let’s be honest, it wouldn’t be a Wolfenstein game without over-the-top carnage.

Bethesda will showcase gameplay from Wolfenstein: The Old Blood at PAX East on Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7. They will also be streaming gameplay March 7 and 8 on Twitch starting at 10:30 AM EST each day.
