Best-Selling & Most Played Steam Games of 2018 Revealed

It's that time of year again as Valve publishes the best-selling and most played Steam games of 2018 (so far). Conveniently timed with the end of Steam's summer sale, gamers can see which titles everyone else has been shelling out on in the first half of 2018.

Although Steam has faced a slump in sales in recent months, there are still more than enough players willing to part with their cash. The list shows the big winners when it comes to the digital arcade system, and as always, there are some surprising and not-so-surprising additions to the list.

As with 2017's rankings, Steam has split the games into different categories instead of specifically ranking them. Organized into Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze, fans know which titles are rubbing shoulders with each other. According to the official Steam site, 2018's top sellers include favorites like Rainbow Six Siege and Dota 2. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is also a welcome addition to the list after it shifted one million copies just after its launch in February.

The continuing success of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Grand Theft Auto V see them also sitting in the upper echelon, while newcomer Jurassic World: Evolution is a relatively surprising entry to the upper tier. The Theme Park World-esque park builder hasn't exactly been getting rave reviews since its launch, but it appears that players' hopes of becoming John Hammond is shifting plenty of copies.

Heading down a notch into the Gold category, Dragonball FighterZ shows that fighting games can still be a lucrative gamble. There is equally good news for Path of Exile’s Incursion League when considering it has only been available to buy since June 1. Elsewhere, Bethesda is continuing its recent run of grabbing headlines as The Elder Scrolls Online is still a big hit. Last but not least, the Silver and Bronze categories feature the likes of Fallout 4 and Rise of the Tomb Raider. Considering both titles have new games coming in the near future, it is unsurprising that Steam players are brushing up the franchise's past.

In terms of games with the most simultaneous players, Steam has divided the winners into over 100,000 concurrent players, over 50,000, and over 25,000. Again, PUBG takes the top spot and joins only Dota 2, Warframe, Counter-Strike: Global Offesnsive, GTA V, and Rainbow Six Siege. Boasting over 50,000 simultaneous players are the likes of the seven-year-old, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and unlikely candidates like Gary's Mod and Payday 2. Bringing up the rear, Left 4 Dead 2 has still netted over 25,000 simultaneous players and is just another reason Turtle Rock should move ahead with Left 4 Dead 3.

Highlighting Valve's ability to cash in on the nostalgia factor instead of just relying on the next big release, it is interesting to note that four of Steam's best-selling games are over four years old. With Steam boasting some serious discounts right now, the list is mainly there to remind gamers what they're missing out on if they haven't already downloaded 2018's biggest titles. Valve's rankings showcase games from any genre imaginable, so there is sure to be something for everyone in there.
