Batman Arkham has a big announcement coming on New Year’s Eve, leading fans and bloggers to speculate that the next generation Arkham game could be in development.

On Christmas Eve the Batman Arkham Facebook page posted a “Save the Date” image for December 31, promising a “special announcement” but offering no other details on what that means.

“Visit this page on December 31st for a special announcement…more details to come next week,” the message read.

The gaming blog OverclockersClub speculates that could mean either an upcoming Story DLC for Batman: Arkham Origins(part of the Season Pass) or the “next-gen” Arkham game that Rocksteady is in the midst of developing.

“It seems like an odd time to first unveil a new game, so my bet is on the Story DLC,” noted author ClayMeow. “Both have been shrouded in secrecy up until this point.”

The blog points out that the final campaign in Batman: Arkham Origins shows a preview of the future DLC.

Batman: Arkham Origins is the third game in the highly acclaimed Batman Arkham series, serving as a prequel that takes place about five years before the first game in the series, Batman: Arkham Asylum.

The latest game gave players the story of the reopening of Arkham Asylum and the ultimate creation of Arkham City. It also includes the first ever meeting between Batman and The Joker.

The Batman Arkham series recently made the jump to iOS devices with a free app. Though the app was praised for bringing more pop than previous Batman games, it was considered a bit tedious and very light on strategy.

Next week’s announcement will be posted on the Batman Arkham Facebook page, so fans can tune in on Tuesday to see if there really is a new game in the works.
