Apple's completely redesigned Mac Pro finally has a release date. The powerhouse desktop computer, with its compact cylindrical case, will be available starting in December.

Apple claims that the new Mac Pro is up to twice as fast as the current model with the help of its Intel Xeon E5 chipset. Memory bandwidth and graphics performance have also been dramatically increased. To help control heat through the its 9.9 inch tall chassis, the Mac Pro uses a single thermal core and one fan to push air to the top and out of the computer.

The Mac Pro also includes six Thunderbolt 2 ports, an HDMI 1.4 port, USB 3.0 ports, a pair of Gigabit Ethernet ports, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity. OS X Mavericks will come pre-installed, and the system is said to use 70 percent less power than the current Mac Pro.

As usual, there are a number of different processor, RAM, graphics, and storage options for the Mac Pro, with configurations starting at $2,999 for a system with a 3.7GHz Xeon processor, 12GB RAM, dual 2GB FirePro D3000s, and a 256GB SSD.
