Serious Sam 4 has been treated with an explosive teaser only to announce a delayed release date, which has been pushed back to September. Seven years of exhausting wait are almost over as fans are preparing to defend the Earth from an alien invasion with brutal force and witty jokes.

Serious Sam 4 was initially revealed in 2013, although the devoted community had to wait until 2016 for a development update claiming that the game finally entered full-scale active production. It took Croteam four years to provide the long-desired sequel with new technological advances and improvements. In terms of narrative, Serious Sam 4 goes even further in the past than SS3, ultimately serving as the prequel to the whole series. The latest gameplay reveals were full of signature bloody mayhem, which is a promising sign that the classic shooter franchise is back to its violent glory and brutality. That being said, the arrival is set to happen a month later than expected.

Serious Sam 4 was supposed to come out in August, but publisher Devolver Digital has announced the release date delay in a deeply satisfying video. The short teaser shows a headless kamikaze literally screaming at the top of his lungs - simply because there’s nothing else above his shoulders. The explosive suicidal creature passes the August release and runs directly into the September 24 date blowing it up. What makes this tiny video a great one is a brilliant old school joke by the man Sam himself who’s famously known and widely loved for his quick-witted innuendos and gags. If such a brief teaser carries that much of classic Serious Sam atmosphere, then the full game must be an extraordinary case of fan service.

According to a sincere interview with Croteam, most of the development has been done in the last two to three years, although some sort of preparation work started at least half a decade ago. Now it is all wrapping up, but while Serious Sam 4 is releasing in less than two months, it won’t hit all the existing platforms. Unfortunately, the game will only be available on PC and Google Stadia via an exclusivity deal. Xbox and PlayStation owners will have to wait until 2021 to unleash some serious gory business, although Devolver Digital hasn’t announced any specific dates yet.

A month-long delay of Serious Sam 4 is not even remotely a tragedy considering that modern video games usually get their releases postponed for half a year at the very least. Admittedly, Croteam’s anticipated sequel does require a few weeks of additional polishing for the sake of the demanding Legion system. It promises an unprecedented number of enemies rendered on screen with thousands of them running into battle simultaneously. Such an ambitious scale could benefit from last-minute technical improvements, so it’s definitely worth the wait.

Serious Sam 4 will be available on PC and Google Stadia on September 24, 2020.
