Remnant: From The Ashes is next up in the Epic Games Store’s rotating selection of free games next week. Later this month, the game’s final DLC, Subject 2923, will be released on all platforms, but it’s not included in the free offer.

Remnant: From The Ashes launched fairly quietly last year, but quickly found itself a devoted fanbase. Its mix of Soulslike concepts and third-person gunplay proved to be a potent combination for anyone willing to stomach the immense challenge it posed. Remnant encourages multiple playthroughs by randomizing levels and even bosses, meaning that fans can play through the game after beating it - or hop into an online friend’s game - and find a totally new experience the second time around. Its unique formula was enough to keep fans around for two DLC expansions, the second of which will add two new areas and fill in some story gaps that have kept fans guessing since the original game’s release.

Players who haven’t yet taken the plunge into Remnant: From the Ashes’ challenging world will have the chance to do so risk-free soon. The Epic Games Store updated its free game listings today, revealing that Remnant will be available from August 13th to Augst 20th. Players who try Remnant when it goes free and find themselves wanting more are in luck - Epic Games Stores’ free deal ends the same day the Subject 2923 DLC launches. Along with Remnant, indie adventure The Alto Collection will be free starting on the 13th. Until the new games go live, warehouse-organizing puzzle game Wilmot’s Warehouse and comedy adventure 3 out of 10 will be available.

Giving away free games is one of the big ways that the Epic Games Store differentiated itself when it was trying to draw players away from Steam. That endeavor has been pretty successful, as what started as a limited time event was extended to keep the free games rolling until the end of 2020 following positive response. The other tactic that the Epic Games Store used to build itself up was of course buying exclusive rights to many games, which famously didn’t go over nearly as well, with some players boycotting the storefront and the most unreasonable among them even harassing developers who took the deal.

Remnant: From the Ashes didn’t make a huge splash when it launched, but it’s worth checking out for anyone who likes Soulslikes or just challenging games in general. It brings a lot of clever ideas to the table, especially with how it handles co-op, and if previous free games on the Epic Games Store are any indication, it could be getting an influx of new players to team up with soon.

Remnant: From the Ashes is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
