Age of Empires: Definitive Edition could release on Steam at some point in the future

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is a Windows 10 exclusive, but it could end up on Steam. Eventually.

Adam Isgreen, creative director for Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, suggested the recently released game could arrive on Steam at some point in the future.

PCgamesN asked Isgreen in an interview why Microsoft Studios focused development on the Windows Platform instead of Steam. According to Isgreen, it was partially due to wanting to make the “best version of the game” at this point.

Plus, a little marketplace “competition [isn’t] necessarily a bad thing.” He says that the team is currently focusing on the UWP build of the game, and “just want to make the best version of the game that we can at this point.”

Other distribution platforms aren’t out of the question for the future. At present, though, the current Age of Empires: Definitive Edition build “doesn’t necessarily have all the functionality we would want if we were to bring it to Steam.”

Isgressn added he’s fully aware “some people have issues with the Windows 10 Store,” but once the build is finished, the team will “figure out” if Age of Empires: Definitive Edition can be made available elsewhere.

According to PCgamesM, Microsoft previously said Valve were keeping the game off its platform, but should it and other stores start offering full Windows 10 support, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition could see a release outside the Windows 10 store.

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition releases today, and you can look over our reviews round-up through the link. The RTS features all-new graphics, remastered sound and music, and an update UI.

Definitive Editions for Age of Empires 2 and 3 are also in development alongside Age of Empires 4. The latter is being developed by Relic Entertainment.
