D.Va’s Overwatch mech has been modded into Doom
It’s a truth universally acknowledged that the one thing missing from Doom was the inclusion of an enormous pink mech. Thankfully, the game’s modding community has come good, blending the iconic shooter with Blizzard’s more colourful take on the FPS.
The cleverly-titled OverDoom adds Overwatch hero D.Va’s mech to the game. At the touch of a button, you can call in the machine (which is apparently named Tokki), and watch Doomguy scramble inside, met by the same boot sequence you’d experience in Overwatch. From there, the entire thing fits relatively well – while Doom’s protagonist is a bit brawnier than D.Va, Tokki is a surprisingly good fit for the FPS.
In a video which you can check out further down this article, you can watch Doomguy blow away some demons with Tokki’s fusion cannons before using boosters to launch himself into a nearby building. Sadly, neither D.Va’s micro-missiles nor her defense matrix are viable options, but that doesn’t stop Doomguy from ejecting from the fatally-damaged mech when things get a little hairy later on.
Once free of the mech, a few quick console commands let you spawn in another at will, allowing you to keep the Overwatch-inspired killing-spree going.
To get the mod, you’ll need to have GZDoom downloaded. Once you’ve done that, simply head to the game’s ModDB page, where you can download the files you’ll need.
Despite Doom’s age, its modding scene is still going very strong. As well as the introduction of D.Va, a fan-made HD remaster and a golfing mini-game have both been recently modded in. And if that weren’t enough, id Software co-founder John Romero recently announced Sigil – the Doom megawad features eighteen new levels, and is on its way in “mid February 2019.”
