9.2 million copies of Minecraft sold, 6 million on PC

Minecraft has sold a whopping six million copies on the PC platform till date, according to Mojang’s Markus Persson. Markus tweeted recently that the number is close to around nine million for all platforms. As reported, Mojang’s Daniel Kaplan gave a more specific number of close to 9.2 million. The current platforms, include PC, Android, iOS and Xbox Live Arcade. The number was close to 4 million last November and this is definitely a substantial increase. Infact, Minecraft for XBLA itself was close to 1 million within the first week of its launch. The popularity of the game is building up quickly and currently the alpha and beta builds are available for players to try out. For Xbox Live Arcade, Minecraft has the prestige of becoming the fastest selling title of all times, beating Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops.

For those not in the know, Minecraft was developed and created by Markus Persson. The game, at present, is in pre-release alpha mode and the basic gameplay allows people to create and destroy different kinds of blocks in a three-dimensional backdrop. The player is allowed to create constructions, structures, buildups and other art related work in the game. There are multiple game modes and the game allows users to play multiplayer content as well. It is basically a sandbox construction game.

The game is available for the Android smartphone as well and there’s a paid as well as a free version of Minecraft. You use blocks to create masterpieces to travel, hangout with friends, sit at the park, the possibilities are pretty vast. With the Android app, you don’t have to use your computer and you can play it anywhere you go. The game lets you build anything you can imagine and has creative and survival game modes. There are 36 different kinds of blocks and you can invite your friends to your world via your local wireless network and play with them. The app allows you to save multiplayer worlds on your phone itself. For those of you’ll having the Xperia PLAY, the game is optimized to work with the physical buttons in the phone.
