In 2001, Zoolander followed male model Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) on a comedic journey as he battled the seedy underbelly of the fashion industry, giving fans plenty of quotable lines along the way. A sequel, Zoolander 2, was first discussed in 2008 and finally announced in 2010, but was stalled before picking up steam last year.

Zoolander 2 officially began filming earlier this year, announced by way of Stiller and co-star Owen Wilson (who plays fellow male model Hansel) crashing a Maison Valentino runway. The sequel is set for a 2016 release date, and the newly released first teaser offers fans a trip into the spacious mind of Derek Zoolander.

The teaser trailer (above) features a Stephen Hawking-like narration of how the universe came to be, before focusing in on Zoolander’s exceptionally small brain – which is filled with cameras, a hairdryer, and a “buk,” of course. Then Stiller appears as Zoolander, giving his famous look, the Blue Steel, and is confused about how to pronounce the sequel’s stylistic title: 2oolander.

Stiller will direct Zoolander 2 from a script he wrote with his Tropic Thunder co-writer Justin Theroux (The Leftovers). Christine Taylor has confirmed she’ll reprise her role as reporter Matilda Jeffries, while Billy Zane will also return. Oscar Winner Penelope Cruz, pop star Justin Bieber, and Kyle Mooney (Saturday Night Live) have also joined the cast.

The last few years have seen a few long-awaited comedy sequels, including Dumb and Dumber To and Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, debut to varying degrees of success. While they offered fans more time with the characters they had come to love, these sequels arguably didn’t deliver the same level of enjoyment or iconic comedic moments/lines.

While it is difficult to tell whether Zoolander 2 will follow in that same trend, the teaser trailer at least offers a few laughs, pulling again from the humor of Derek Zoolander’s stupidity. Whether or not the sequel will be able to offer new laughs while recapturing the original’s humor remains to be seen, but this glimpse of Stiller returning to the role of Derek Zoolander offers some promise.
