The Wolverine released on home video in December 2013 with several different disc-based options, including the comprehensive “Unleashed Edition” which featured director James Mangold’s unrated and slightly extended cut of the film. For the next X-Men home video release by Twentieth Century Fox, fans are going to have to wait months for the director’s cut of X-Men: Days of Future Past by Bryan Singer, which will come only in a second, separate release.

Writer and producer Simon Kinberg appeared on the Fox studio lot earlier today to promote next month’s home video DVD and Blu-ray releases of X-Men: Days of Future Past (it’s currently available digitally) and made a surprise announcement that the film will be re-released next year on home video with additional content. The imminent October 14th 3D Blu-ray combo pack includes a few featurettes, a gag reel and deleted scenes (with optional commentary by Singer) but no director’s cut as previously promised by producer Lauren Shuler Donner.

In addition to Donner’s words to a fan proving untrue, the reason this matters more with this particular X-Men release is because Days of Future Past had a significant amount of content cut from its theatrical release, content that was featured in the movie’s marketing. Of course, we’re referring primarily to the subplot involving Anna Paquin’s Rogue, a popular and staple character from the X-Men comics who was underutilized throughout the original X-Men trilogy. Ironically enough, Paquin somehow managed to get erased entirely (cameo aside) from X-Men: Days of Future Past. Still, those scenes were written by Simon Kinberg and shot shot for the film.

“It’s a big chunk, a substantial part of the movie. We want to give (fans) the fullest picture of the film — behind the camera, and in front of it… Every movie has scenes that are cut out, but not every movie has scenes cut out with such a beloved character.”

As Variety reports, there will over 10 minutes of new scenes added in what’s being dubbed the “Rogue Cut” of X-Men: Days of Future Past when it re-releases in the first half of 2015. Paquin’s scenes in the future portion of the movie will be added along with sequences that involve other characters, including one last mission for old Professor X and Magneto. Kinberg previously explained that he had wanted to give them one more mission to go on before the end, but that it – and the inclusion of Rogue – didn’t factor much into the main plot of the already-complex movie so it had to be cut.

We can only assume (read: hope) this content will still be included as separate deleted scenes on next month’s release of X-Men: Days of Future Past and we’ve reached out to clarify if it is. As it currently stands, the “Rogue Cut” announcement – while something we all want to see – isn’t necessarily a good one for eager potential buyers since it shows the studio intentionally holding back the director’s cut in an attempt to lure fans into buying the movie twice. And this is just after earning back fans and critics with the movie in the first place.

A similar sketchy ploy was enacted by Paramount with the home video release of Transformers: Dark of the Moon in 2011, which saw the first Blu-ray release lacking in special features and holding back the 3D version until a followup release several months later.

Kinberg and Singer are currently in pre-production on X-Men: Apocalypse, the direct followup to Days of Future Past, which begins shooting in April for a May 2016 release. Singer recently signed on to again direct. In talking about DOFP, Kinberg made this interesting comment:

“I pray to God I never work on another time travel movie.”

Take that as a hint that X-Men: Apocalypse will focus entirely on the characters in the ’80s and may not include the original cast as Kinberg previously hinted. We’re still holding out hope for some time-travelling characters though…

Deadpool is scheduled to hit theaters on February 12, 2016, followed by X-Men: Apocalypse on May 27, 2016, Wolverine 3 (not the official title) on March 3, 2017, and some as-yet unspecified X-Men film on July 13, 2018. In other Fox/Marvel film news, Fantastic Four opens August 7, 2015, followed by Fantastic Four 2 on July 14, 2017.
