Stranger Things season 3 may start filming in the spring, according to David Harbour. With his performance, the veteran actor continued to endear himself to fans as one of the elder statesman of the mostly younger cast in season 2. The show’s highly praised second run inspired all kinds of discussion about its themes and controversies. Harbour’s character arc as Police Chief Jim Hopper with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) was often at the center of those discussions.


Despite some issues being raised with Stranger Things 2 as it related to season 1, the show remains a juggernaut for Netflix. As such, it should come as no surprise that the Duffer Brothers are now hard at work on season 3. There’s still a chance that the next batch of new episodes will begin filming sooner rather than later in 2018, and Harbour indicated in a recent interview that the cameras could be rolling once springtime comes around.


Speaking to Collider, Harbour spoke at length about the first two seasons of Stranger Things and what he’s expecting for season 3. He explained that he probably won’t be more nervous about season 3 than he was for season 2, due to the challenge of overcoming the hurdle of the dreaded “sophomore slump.” But now that the show can safely say it successfully sidestepped most problems it could have had in its second season, it’s time to look forward to the third. Harbour couldn’t confirm a start date for filming of season 3, but he did give a hint of what he’s hearing:

“I’ve heard rumors that it’s supposed to be March or April, but I don’t have a confirmation.”


In Hopper’s case, season 2 of Stranger Things focused mostly on his “adoption” of Eleven and interactions with her. It didn’t delve much into the chief’s background and family history, which has been hinted at throughout the first two seasons. But it sounds like Harbour would like to see more of that explored in later episodes. He believes, now that the makers of the show have delivered a successful second season, that they could do up to five “no sweat.”


It’s far from a secret at this point that the Duffers and others involved with Stranger Things expect the show to run 4-5 seasons. Clearly, there will be no problem getting the third season out. But where the show goes from there could be anyone’s guess. As Harbour pointed out in the interview, there’s still a lot to cover with his own character that hasn’t been studied. They have plenty of time for that.


Harbour also recently said that he wants to work more in season 3 with Joe Keery, who plays Steve Harrington. At this point it’s unclear whether he’ll get his wish, or if the show will go in any of the directions Harbour desires. But if his hints at the start of filming for season 3 turn out to be true, fans won’t have to wait too long to get more information on what to expect once Stranger Things comes back.
