Wonder Woman Screening Early Reactions Are Positive

The social media embargo has lifted on Wonder Woman, and the reactions have been positive thus far. It’s no secret that Warner Bros. has had it rough with their burgeoning DC Extended Universe. Instead of following up Man of Steel with a typical sequel, the studio decided to take things in a different direction and go full-steam ahead with a shared universe that now consists of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, Cyborg, and countless more DC Comics characters.

Before we see all of those superheroes come together in Zack Snyder’s Justice League later this year, the next chapter in the DCEU will have moviegoers going back to World War I to witness Diana Prince/Wonder Woman’s origin story. The movie is directed by Patty Jenkins and based on a script by comic book icons Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns. It stars Gal Gadot as titular hero and Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, along with the likes of Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, Danny Huston, and David Thewlis.

Warner Bros. screened Wonder Woman for select members of the press last week, and the spoiler-free, early reactions were quite positive. While full reviews are still under embargo, social media reactions have started to seep online, and the reactions are just as positive as they were last week. Some are calling the movie the best DC film since Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. You can read the tweets from critics below:

Embargo lifted, so I can say unequivocally that Patty Jenkins delivered a true Wonder Woman story, in more ways than I honestly hoped.

#WonderWoman is the best DCEU film so far. The heart of Gal Gadot's Diana powers it, and the shift from mythic into WWI story really works.

The most encouraging aspect of these reactions for fans of the still-fledgling DCEU is the fact that the positive responses are coming from both critics and fans, backed by thstudio’sos confidence in lifting the review embargo so early. While there were positive test screenings for both Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, they lacked the agreement between audiences and critics Wonder Woman is seeing, and their review embargoes remained in place until just a few days before their respective release dates. All signs are currently indicating it is in fact the big win DC has been looking for.

Loved WONDER WOMAN. She reminds me of Christopher Reeve's Superman: true north superhero w/ no angst or cynicism, which is needed right now.

WONDER WOMAN: Easily my favorite DCEU film. Has the humor and heart the franchise so desperately needs. Gadot and Pine are charming as hell.

Very pleased to report that #WonderWoman is the best DC movie since THE DARK KNIGHT. I'm already looking forward to seeing it again.

Obviously there’s no way to know the true consensus until more official forms of critical and audiences scores are recorded through the likes of IMDB, Metacritic, and Rotten Tomatoes, but at this point it should be fairly safe to say that, no matter the ultimate aggregate score, Wonder Woman is likely to end up being the least divisive DCEU movie to date, something a lot of fans can breathe a sigh of over.

#WonderWoman has some of the coolest, most insanely well-performed, and badass fight scenes ever; singularly choreographed + shot. And fun!

WONDER WOMAN is great. My favorite of the recent DC movies. It's fierce, funny, well-written and badass. @GalGadot owns it. Her lasso FTW

Of the many encouraging things being said, the high praise for both Gal Gadot’s performance as Wonder Woman and Patty Jenkins’ turn as director serves as a fairly decisive answer to the question marks that have been looming over both their heads due to their lack of big budget blockbuster experience.

The most wonderful thing about WONDER WOMAN is the wonderful Wonder Woman. Gal IS Wonder Woman. Now then, about WONDER WOMAN

Some people may be quick to challenge these early reactions by acknowledging the fact that the early reactions for Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice were equally as positive, only to have the film universally shot down by critics days later. However, it’s worth noting that those reactions were from fans who attended early screenings (which you can do for Wonder Woman next week); they were not from critics who attended press screenings.

Still, it’s understandable for people to be skeptical about any new installment in the DC Extended Universe, considering how divisive the shared universe has been thus far. But if reviews happen to be as positive as the reactions have been, then it looks like Warner Bros. may have their first universally acclaimed DCEU movie on their hands. And considering that that movie is the first female-led superhero movie in over a decade says a lot, not to mention that it’s the first female-directed superhero movie since 2008.

Despite being around for over 75 years, Wonder Woman didn’t make her silver screen debut until last year. Now, within two years, the character will have been featured in three movies – Batman V Superman, Wonder Woman, and Justice League. If everything goes according to plan, this won’t be the last time Diana Prince leads her own superhero movie. The studio already has plans to make a Wonder Woman sequel, although we don’t know when that will release.
