Wonder Woman Is Most Tweeted Summer 2017 Blockbuster

Wonder Woman has earned the distinction of being the most-tweeted about blockbuster film during the summer of 2017. Starring Gal Gadot in the titular role after her stunning debut as the character in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, Wonder Woman reached several major milestones after its $100 million opening weekend stateside in June, including grosses of more than $400 million each at the domestic and international box offices.

The film’s $400 million tally was also enough to make Wonder Woman the top-grossing domestic film of the summer, which upon its release was the beneficiary of rave reviews from critics and a stellar “fresh” rating of 92 percent from Rotten Tomatoes.

And while positive critical buzz about a film never hurts its prospects going in, clearly there was another force at work with the chatter about Wonder Woman on social media, which could at least in part explain its boffo box office numbers.

According to a post by Twitter Data, Wonder Woman came in at No. 1 as the most-tweeted about summer blockbuster film. Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic Dunkirk came in at No. 2 on the list, followed by the Marvel Cinematic Universe smash Spider-Man: Homecoming at No. 3.

Rounding out the top 5 was the upcoming DC Extended Universe superhero extravaganza Justice League at No. 4, and the Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me at No. 5. Twitter Data did not supply specific statistics about the most-tweeted film, just the ranking.

While seeing a movie in theaters is naturally a conversation-starter, clearly that wasn’t a factor with Justice League, which isn’t slated for release until November. The film did receive a lot of attention, though, over director Zack Snyder’s personal tragedy, as well as the state of Ben Affleck’s future as Batman in the franchise. It’s conceivable, too, that Justice League was a benefactor of the online hype surrounding Wonder Woman, since Gadot will be reprising her role as the Amazon warrior princess in the film this November.

Even though a film is tweeted about a lot by fans, it doesn’t mean that all the buzz is positive. That at least appears to be the case for the Shakur film All Eyez on Me, which was reportedly criticized by the late rapper’s friends and colleagues over claims of inaccuracy, and savaged by critics with a “rotten” 16 percent rating from Rotten Tomatoes.

In all likelihood some negative news also drove Wonder Woman‘s numbers on Twitter as well. It’s completely within reason to guess that James Cameron’s controversial comments about Wonder Woman being “a step backwards” (and Patty Jenkins’ swift response) led to a late surge in social media activity when Twitter started its tally for its top summer blockbusters list.
