Wonder Woman 2: Work Has Already Begun, Co-Written by Patty Jenkins
Wonder Woman hasn’t even been out for a month and work has already begun on the sequel. According to Geoff Johns, the president and Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics, the treatment for Wonder Woman 2 is currently being written.
Following its third weekend, Wonder Woman has grossed over $573 million at the worldwide box office, and is already the sixth highest-grossing film of the year. As the fourth installment of the DC Extended Universe, Wonder Woman has received glowing praise from critics for the performances of its stars (Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Chris Pine as Steve Trevor), the directing, the story, the characters, and the humor.
Considering the film’s success, it comes as no surprise that a sequel is on the way. Though no plans have been officially announced, Johns, who worked on the story for the first movie, said that he and Patty Jenkins, the director of Wonder Woman, are co-writing a treatment for the sequel (with Jenkins having previously expressed interest in directing the sequel). As Johns told Variety:
Patty and I are writing the treatment right now. The goal is to make another great “Wonder Woman” film. I had a blast making it with Patty the first time. We’ve got a cool idea for the second one.
As a character that has been in comics books since 1941, there is so much source material that it’s hard to say where a sequel could take Diana Prince or what that “cool idea” could be. Wonder Woman also has a strong rogues’ gallery full of options for potential antagonists for Wonder Woman 2, including Cheetah, Giganta, and Circe. The sequel could also see the return of Doctor Poison, played by Elena Anaya.
Fans are already wondering what the setting will be for Wonder Woman 2. The first film took place in World War I, but the sequel could be set in modern times, much like Captain America: The Winter Soldier took place 70 years after the events of Captain America: The First Avenger. Putting the film in a different time period would give the film a completely new supporting cast, which means that the Amazons would be the only characters likely to return.
While fans wait for more news of Wonder Woman 2, the Diana character will return later this year in Justice League. Gal Gadot will reprise her role as Wonder Woman in that movie, along with Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta and Robin Wright as Antiope.
