Wonder Woman 1984 Casts Ravi Patel & Gabriella Wilde
Ravi Patel and Gabriella Wilde have joined the cast of Wonder Woman 1984. Casting announcements continue to come out, as more and more details slowly emerge about the sequel to Patty Jenkins’s 2017 hit Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman was an enormous success, surpassing the $800 million box office mark, and making Jenkins the helmer of the highest-grossing film directed by a woman ever.
Wonder Woman served as an origin story for Diana, and followed the Amazonian warrior as she left behind her secluded home of Themyscira to help bring an end to World War I and defeat Ares. During her mission she met and fell in love with American spy Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine. Wonder Woman 2, titled Wonder Woman 1984, will see Gal Gadot return as the titular hero. Filmmaker Patty Jenkins will also work behind the camera once again as the sequel’s director, and co-wrote the script with Geoff Johns. Not many plot details for Wonder Woman 1984 have emerged yet, though as the title suggests, the movie will be set during the 1980s, and have Wonder Woman face off against threats from the Soviet Union.
Deadline first reported on Friday that two more stars have been added to Wonder Woman 1984. Ravi Patel is best known for creating the comedy/documentary Meet the Patels, and has starred in the TBS sitcom Wrecked and Netflix’s Master of None. Gabriella Wilde starred as Sue Snell in the 2013 remake of Carrie, and was also in 2011's The Three Musketeers. Both Patel and Wilde have been cast in “mystery roles”, and no details or hints surrounding their characters have been revealed as of now.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Natasha Rothwell from HBO’s Insecure had also joined the cast in an undisclosed role. In fact, a majority of casting announcements from Wonder Woman 1984 have withheld all character details, causing wild speculation over precisely who and what can be expected from the Wonder Woman sequel. The only new addition to Wonder Woman 1984 whose character identity is confirmed is Kristen Wigg, who will play the sequel’s villain, Cheetah. Along with all of these new additions, Chris Pine is returning as Steve Trevor, despite the fact that his character died at the end of Wonder Woman. This is yet another detail that has sparked quite a bit of discussion among Wonder Woman fans, who are of course questioning the nature of Trevor’s return.
During the film’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, Gal Gadot insisted that Wonder Woman 1984 is “not a sequel”, while director Patty Jenkins added that she wanted this next Wonder Woman film to be a completely unique movie. Fans at SDCC also saw some exclusive first footage from the film. Because Wonder Woman 1984 is only a few weeks into shooting - and still has many more to go - the footage was unfinished and without polished special effects, so the scene wasn't released online, limiting knowledge about the sequel even more. The continued mystery surrounding the sequel is only raising the already sky-high anticipation for Wonder Woman 1984. Fans will simply have to keep their ears to the ground and look out for any new plot details, as the hype for Wonder Woman 1984 builds with each new announcement.
