Hollywood has been forever changed by the multi-franchise universe-building storytelling approach that Marvel Studios has brought to the forefront. Aside from Disney/Marvel’s comic book counterparts launching their own plans, recent months have brought reports that studios have been scrambling to develop their non-superhero properties into multi-film endeavors akin to The Avengers.

Most notably, Universal announced its intention to revive its classic shared monster movie universe. The first installment arrive, Dracula Untold, arrived last month – and while that film wasn’t the automatic slam-dunk the studio may have hoped for, it did bring in more than $200 million worldwide on a $70 million budget. Given these developments, today’s news comes as far less of a surprise.

According to Deadline, Universal is actively developing a reboot of The Wolfman and is reportedly eyeing screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski to script the film. Guzikowski only has two feature writing credits to his name – Contraband and Prisoners – but given that the latter is one of the stronger, more intense Hollywood drama/thrillers in recent years (read our review), it could bode well for this take on the Wolfman character.

This new film, of course, follows Universal’s failed 2010 attempt at resurrecting the character most famously played by Lon Chaney Jr. in the 1941 film The Wolf Man. Universal’s Wolfman franchise restart joins other in-development reboots for The Mummy and Van Helsing in the studio’s “monster-verse reboot” plans.

From a business perspective, it makes perfect sense for Universal to fast-track its plans to revive its famous monster movie playground of the 1930s and 1940s. After all, the Fast and the Furious franchise – currently the studio’s biggest moneymaker – could be speeding towards the finish line, and Universal will need another sure-thing property (or properties) to take its place.

Are you excited for Universal’s shared monster universe, and who do you think the studio should cast as the new Wolfman? Any thoughts on who you would like to see direct the film? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments section below.

No release date has been revealed for The Wolfman reboot, though it may be the recently announced 2017 Universal monster movie. Stay tuned to Screen Rant for updates as this story develops.
