A synopsis for The Witcher: Blood Origin, the prequel show to The Witcher, confirms the series will reveal the first Witcher's origin story. The Witcher season 1 followed Henry Cavill's monster slayer Geralt of Rivia, Princess Cirilla of Cintra (Freya Allan), and the powerful sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra) through different points of time as their destinies become entwined, eventually emerging into a single timeline by the end of the season. The show is based on the popular book series by Polish fantasy author Andrzej Sapkowski and the three video games the books inspired. Season 1, adapted primarily from the author's short story prequels The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, was well-received by fans and critics and was renewed for a second season before the first even premiered. Production on season 2 has faced a few delays due to the coronavirus pandemic but is set to come out sometime this year.

Further proving the success of the fantasy series, Netflix announced a prequel series to The Witcher last summer. The Witcher: Blood Origin will be a 6-part live-action series set 1200 years before Geralt's story in the aftermath of the Conjunction of the Spheres from the novels. The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will produce the spin-off series alongside writer Declan de Barra. With the prequel series in development, more details have emerged surrounding the show's plot.

Netflix announces the synopsis for The Witcher: Blood Origin, which confirms that the prequel series will tell the origin of the first Witcher. Read the show's official logline below:

Set in an elven world 1200 years before the world of The Witcher, Blood Origin will tell a story lost to time - the creation of the first prototype Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal “conjunction of the spheres,” when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.

Along with the synopsis reveal, Netflix has also announced the casting of Queen & Slim star Jodie Turner-Smith as a series lead. Turner-Smith will play Éile, an elite warrior with the voice of a goddess, who "has left her clan and position as Queen's guardian to follow her heart as a nomadic musician." She is reckoned "to return to the way of the blade in her quest for vengeance and redemption." Along with starring opposite Daniel Kaluuya in the acclaimed Queen & Slim, the British actress is also known for her work as Azima in The Last Ship and will also star as Anne Boleyn in an upcoming Channel 5 miniseries. The Witcher: Blood Origin is one of two current Netflix spin-offs from the popular series. The streamer has also confirmed an anime movie is in the works. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf will explore the origins of Geralt’s mentor Vesemir, who is the oldest serving Witcher from the School of the Wolf.

With fans eagerly waiting to find out what's to come in The Witcher season 2, news of all of the upcoming spin-off content should hold them over for the time being. While it still might be a while before the new shows come out, it will be exciting to see how The Witcher: Blood Origin will explore the origin of the first Witcher. There is clearly a lot of material to work with from the world of The Witcher, and fans are likely going to learn more details about the series whenever the show goes into production.
