Marvel Studios' next Holiday Special could be a Deadpool Christmas movie, especially since Ryan Reynolds has confirmed that a festive adventure for the merc-with-a-mouth has already been penned. After the success of the Werewolf by Night Halloween special and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which saw Mantis and Drax travel to Earth to retrieve Kevin Bacon as a Christmas present for Peter, more Holiday Specials must be on the cards for Marvel Studios. Now, on the heels of his new Christmas spectacular, Spirited, Ryan Reynolds might have posed the perfect opportunity for his much-loved superhero, Deadpool, to spread the holiday cheer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In an interview with Big Issue, Reynolds revealed that he and Deadpool co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick penned a script for a Christmas movie starring Deadpool, but that "it got lost in the shuffle of Disney acquiring Fox and it never got made." This information creates the perfect chance for Marvel Studios to design a Holiday Special featuring the merc-with-a-mouth, especially since he'd fit in perfectly at Christmastime - both because of his comedic nature, and as another jolly man in a red suit. The fact that a Christmas script has already been written for the character means it should be easy for Marvel to produce a festive Deadpool treat.

A Deadpool Christmas Film Has Been Written

Speaking about his new Christmas outing, Spirited, which sees him perform opposite Will Ferrell in a modern adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, Reynolds confirmed that a Christmas Deadpool script was written four years ago. This was presumably during or after the production of the Deadpool 2 movie, and potentially in an effort to make Deadpool's role in Fox's X-Men franchise larger. He stated that he'd "love to see a song and dance number in a Deadpool movie," and while the script written for a festive Deadpool adventure wasn't actually a musical, it's possible that Reynolds' love of musicals could inform what direction Marvel Studios might take a Deadpool Holiday Special.

Reynolds didn't go into detail about what the story entailed for a Christmas film featuring Deadpool, but stated that it was a fully-formed idea for a feature-film set at Christmas, that could have potentially been released if Disney hadn't acquired Fox in 2019. This wouldn't be the first time that Deadpool starred in some holiday antics, as Deadpool 2 had previously been released as a PG-13 version, Once Upon a Deadpool, that, although met with a divided response, featured a Christmas-themed marketing campaign, so Deadpool has been proven to be great at bringing the festive cheer.

Marvel Studios’ Holiday Specials Could Debut Deadpool In The MCU

Deadpool was the only confirmed character to be making the move from Fox to Disney, with Reynolds being incredibly enthusiastic about his beloved character's debut in the MCU proper. His passion for future Deadpool projects is evident, most prominently in the inclusion of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine for a team-up that audiences have been begging to see for years. It's not too hard to imagine that Reynolds would want to revive the old Christmas movie he penned with Deadpool's writers, and now that Werewolf by Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special movie have been met with positive acclaim, he has the perfect opportunity.

Deadpool 3 will be releasing in the MCU's Phase 6 in November 2024, with both Reynolds and Jackman reprising their roles from the Fox X-Men film series. With almost two years until then, it's possible that Deadpool could make his MCU debut as a cameo in another project before then, perhaps even in a revival of the Christmas-themed Deadpool script. There's currently no talk of a Deadpool Holiday Special, but when Reynolds sets his sights on a project, it tends to come to fruition, previously seen with the more accurate depiction of Deadpool after X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and even with the Once Upon a Deadpool release.

One of the benefits of Marvel Studios' production of Special Presentations is the ability for the studio to experiment with genre, with Werewolf by Night taking on the feeling of old horror and monster movies, and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special being a truly festive flick. This opens the door for a potential special featuring Deadpool with an injection of movie musical magic, helped along by Reynolds' love of song and dance. Only time will tell what form a Deadpool Christmas film could take in the MCU, but since the antihero is finally on his way, it might not be long before Deadpool brings the Christmas cheer.
