After a long-delayed production, Mad Max: Fury Road finally made its way into theaters this past weekend, and shocked audiences around the globe. After some mild early box office estimates, the film has managed to succeed thanks to extremely positive buzz, and has so far been performing well. But does this mean that we could soon see a sequel? According to writer/director George Miller, it seems like a very real possibility.

To this point, Miller has been pretty quiet about the idea of making another sequel in the Mad Max series, but it now seems that silence has been broken. The Australian filmmaker joined Twitter this weekend, and used the social media tool to announce that we should expect more Mad Max stories in the future:

The buzz on Mad Max: Fury Road has been absolutely tremendous - locking in a 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes - and it has translated to success around the globe. In America, the film opened in second place behind Pitch Perfect 2, but still made a respectable $44.4 million. It was internationally that the film really took off, however, as it managed to pull in $65 million from foreign territories, meaning that it already has a $109 million total. This is actually more than Pitch Perfect 2 has made in the same time frame, having made $108 million so far.

It should be noted that this isn't exactly the first time that the idea of a Mad Max 5 has come up. Back in 2010, it was said that the filmmaker was actually planning to immediately follow-up Mad Max: Fury Road with a sequel titled Mad Max: Furiosa. It's hard to say if those plans are actually the same plans that Miller seems to be teasing above, but it's worth mentioning that the filmmaker has talked about a failed anime project that would have told the backstory of Charlize Theron's Furiosa character.

For those that really loved Mad Max: Fury Road this is truly nothing but good news, and it's even better that George Miller himself - the man who created it all - is still so interested in telling stories that are set in this world. Hopefully it won't be too long until we start hearing about developments with this sequel, including Tom Hardy's involvement, but you can be sure that we will be following the project very closely. It's very clear that the world needs more of Mad Max from Miller's mind, and it's great to hear that he's willing to provide.
