Though it came out 33 years later, Sir Ridley Scott’s Prometheus acted as a prequel to the director’s seminal sci-fi drama-thriller, Alien. New characters played by new actors ventured to a familiar, remote location following a map they’d unearthed. What they find, however, points them to threats that are unleashed in Scott’s Alien. For that reason, audiences waited through Prometheus for direct connections to Alien, and while some surfaced toward the end of the film, we’re now learning that the real connections will be made in next year’s Alien: Covenant.

Michael Fassbender is currently filming Alien: Covenant with Ridley Scott. Fassbender will once again play David, the android who accompanied the manned mission to LV-223 in Prometheus. In a recent interview with Inquirer.net, from the set of Covenant, Fassbender coyly hinted at an action that will happen in his sequel that will make Alien fans very excited:

There are going to be great sets and aliens coming out of people. … The sets are fantastic. Again, the most impressive sets I’ve seen since Prometheus, which was the original setting. It’s a fantastic mixture of high-end technology and primitive elements. The way that I can explain, it is the same way that Ridley did Blade Runner.

Aliens. Coming out of people. That means chestbursters, folks. And thanks to the pluralization in Michael Fassbender’s quote, we’re going to expect a lot of them.

For the uninformed, the aliens in Ridley Scott’s universe also go by the name Xenoporphs. They begin life as an egg, but eventually hatch and attach themselves to a living host (could be anything as small as a cat, but usually – in these movies – ends up being a human). That stage is referred to as face-hugging.

At that stage, you now have an alien growing inside your body. It has to come out, somehow. For reasons known only to them, they prefer to exit through our chest cavities.

Prometheus ended with David (Michael Fassbender) and Elizabeth Saw (Noomi Rapace) boarding a ship and heading out into the void in search of the Engineers, to ask them why they planned to destroy our planet. We don’t know, for certain, what will happen in Sir Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant, but Michael Fassbender’s comments – particularly about the sets, and the aliens bursting out of people – have us incredibly excited for the sequel (and Alien prequel) set to reach theaters on August 4, 2017.
