Last December, Star Wars: The Force Awakens revisited a galaxy far, far away 30 years after the second Death Star exploded and the Rebels triumphed over the Empire. This winter, the Star Wars franchise is winding back the clock, to a time when the Imperials were still strong and the Rebels were struggling for victories. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is almost here, and to get fans even more excited for its release, Disney and Lucasfilm have released a new poster for the movie, featuring the franchise's most notorious villain looming over its newest main protagonist.

During his appearance on The Star Wars Show today, director Gareth Edwards unveiled the newest Rogue One poster, which features all of the story's primary players. Felicity Jones' Jyn Erso is, of course, prominently displayed among the overs, but it's impossible to miss Darth Vader hovering behind her, his face plastered over part of the Death Star. Speaking of the space station, the way some of its texturing is overlapped on Jyn's face is eerie. At the bottom, you can also see Imperial forces heading to battle; stormtroopers with their blasters ready, AT-ACTs lumbering along and some TIE Fighters about to shoot down nearby Rebel ships. The poster is great enough on its own, but it was also used to announce the next Rogue One trailer, which will premiere tomorrow on ABC's Good Morning America, so be on the lookout for that when you wake up.

As the first of the "Anthology" spinoff movies, Rogue One will have a remarkably different tone compared to the main Star Wars installments. Yes, there will be a lot of familiar sights, from droids to Star Destroyers to even a few returning characters, but this time around, there's extra emphasis on the 'Wars' aspect. Set shortly before the events of A New Hope, the story will follow Jyn Erso and her team of Rebel operatives as they try to steal the Death Star plans. It will be a much grittier tale, and rest assured, there will be a lot of casualties.

Even though Director Orson Krennic, played by Ben Mendelsohn, will be Rogue One's main antagonist, fans will still see Darth Vader in action, with James Earl Jones reprising the Sith Lord's voice. So far the only taste of Vader Rogue One has provided was when we saw him from behind at the end of the previous trailer and heard his trademark breathing. Hopefully tomorrow's trailer will provide a better idea of what to expect from him, ideally with a scene showing him slaughtering a few Rebels with ease.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story arrives in theaters on December 16, but for now, let us know what you think of this poster in the comments section.
