Sigourney Weaver is one of those actors that has a blank check when it comes to roles in Hollywood, and if not, then she damned well should! An Academy Award nominee, as well as general film-making icon in her own right, Weaver is the sort of talented individual who has run the gauntlet, and come out both ends with flying colors. Which makes her possible casting into the Marvel Cinematic Universe all that more exciting, as recent events have inspired us, and the internet at large, to think that Sigourney Weaver could be heading to the MCU in the near future.
Sigourney Weaver A Monster Calls

All it took was an interview with Wired to stoke the proverbial fires, as Weaver had commented about how she's been impressed with the casting apparatus over at Marvel Studios. Remarking that she'd noticed the impressive slate of actors the studio had wrangled over the course of her own personal marathon, the interviewer was curious as to why Sigourney Weaver out of all people was mainlining MCU movies. With a simple four word rebuttal, the internet was off:

I can't tell you!

Now unless Sigourney Weaver is researching the Marvel Studios canon for a retrospective she's helping present, which isn't a far off proposition as her authoritative voice and presence would be perfect for such a scenario, she's more than likely studying up for a potential role of her own in the MCU. Still, who or what could she be playing? Well, the first potential role that came to mind when Weaver was announced as a hypothetical MCU cast member was none other than Janet Van Dyne, aka the original Wasp from the Ant-Man franchise.

Considering the role has already been earmarked for a big name in the same league as Michael Douglas, Ant-Man and The Wasp's 2018 release seems like it's in line with any sort of preliminary casting discussions. With Michelle Pfeiffer and Sharon Stone both being tipped at being possible dream picks for the role, Sigourney Weaver is easily a safe pick for the role. Though should that possibility not work out, there's another possible Marvel Cinematic Universe film that Weaver has already name dropped.

While it's hard to pick out a specific role in Captain Marvel, the fact that Sigourney Weaver mentioned both the film and Brie Larson by name could indicate that there's a part in that film with her name on it. Still, at this point all we can do is speculate, with the hopes that next year's San Diego Comic-Con will bring more definitive answers for the further actions of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. No matter what the truth may be, we're keeping our fingers crossed that all of this scuttlebutt might lead to the revelation that Sigourney Weaver will be joining the MCU in a role befitting of her stature as one of Hollywood's best actors.

In the meantime, you can catch Sigourney Weaver next in A Monster Calls when it opens on December 23rd.
