The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is released in both the UK and US on Friday, November 2, 2018.

The film is based on E. T. A. Hoffmann’s 1816 short story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King that was famously adapted into Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s 1892 ballet The Nutcracker.

It is co-directed by Swedish Lasse Hallström, who shot most of ABBA’s music videos, and American Joe Johnston, who helmed Captain America: The First Avenger, Jumanji, and Jurassic Park 3.

The modern adaption of the classic tale stars Kiera Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy alongside Twilight star Mackenzie Foy as Clara.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms tale originated as a short story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King in 1816.

It was most famously adapted as a ballet by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in the 19th century.

The official synopsis for the new movie reads: “Young Clara needs a magical, one-of-a-kind key to unlock a box that contains a priceless gift.

“A golden thread leads her to the coveted key, but it soon disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world.

“In that world, she meets a soldier named Phillip, a group of mice and the regents who preside over three realms.

“Clara and Phillip must now enter a fourth realm to retrieve the key and restore harmony to the unstable land.”
