Daisy Ridley will voice the lead character in the North American release of the Studio Ghibli film Only Yesterday.
Only Yesterday, which came out in Japan in 1991, will release on January 1 at New York's IFC Center, with a wider release coming in February.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ridley said she believes the beloved Japanese film has endured because the central question that drives the main character, "how do you make your dreams come true?" is something which "feels exactly right."
"The human stories are so human" in the Ghibli films, Ridley said, even when the films are "fantastical."
Only Yesterday is set in the 1980s and follows the main character, Taeko, as she visits relatives in the Japanese countryside. During the course of the movie, Taeko reflects on her childhood and whether or not she has remained true to the girl she used to be.
Ridley, in case you were somehow unaware, plays Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a film that's currently steamrolling box office records left and right. The Force Awakens took the number-one spot over the long Christmas weekend, bringing in $153.5 million USD. That's in addition to its huge opening and strong box-office performance that helped to drive The Force Awakens to a billion dollars faster than any movie before it.
