Charlie Cox shared where he wants Matt Murdock’s character arc to go to in Daredevil season 3. The blind but skilled lawyer was able to foil Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver) and the Hand’s attempt to take over New York with the help of his newfound friends in The Defenders. With Matt now having new connections outside of his personal circle of Foggy (Elden Henson) and Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) – although all of them presume he is dead – Daredevil might have learned a thing or two about working together as a unit instead of always carrying out dangerous missions alone and will hopefully keep this in mind moving forward.


Much as The Defenders was an ensemble show – melding the worlds of four of the Marvel Netflix characters – arguably, Matt had some big character developments in the series. Not only did the series reunite him with Elektra (Élodie Yung), it also effectively teased and set up his upcoming third go in a standalone series with that snippet of him lying bruised and recuperating from his Midland Circle near-death experience. And while he was coy regarding the specifics of Daredevil season 3, Cox shared some of the things he wants to see in terms of character arc for his superhero alter-ego.

Speaking to Collider for The Defenders post-mortem, the English actor dissected what he hopes Matt’s biggest takeaway from his first time working with a bunch of super skilled people towards the greater good. We know that the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen is notoriously known to crack everything by himself, but forcing him into a situation where he had to consider others’ decisions hopefully was a good eye-opener that it’s okay to depend on other people at times:

“I don’t know what they’re thinking or planning for Season 3. I’d like to see the relationship with Karen figure itself out. I’d like Matt to be able to find that vulnerability that is required, in order to be honest, up front and vulnerable with someone that he cares greatly about. Hopefully, he’s learned some lessons from The Defenders. Hopefully, he’s learned that sometimes we need each other. He believes in God and maybe he’s beginning to understand that God gave us each other for a reason, and he doesn’t have to be so stubborn in his need and desire to do everything by himself.”

No confirmation as of yet, but chances are that Daredevil season 3 will tread one of the most important and best comic book runs for the character in the Born Again storyline. If anything, the last shot of Matt in The Defenders is a TV adaptation of the comics cover with him lying on a bed, being taken care of by nuns. In that particular narrative, the blind lawyer by day, crime fighting warrior by night is reunited with his mother, Maggie, who was also teased in his final scene in The Defenders. Other subplots in the narrative get much darker and it will be interesting how Marvel and Netflix translate them on the small screen.


Meanwhile, presumably months before Daredevil season 3 rolls out and even prior to the start of production, some nuggets of information have been released that could help fans know what to expect in the series. Recently, a new character description for the show hints that one of the villains, Stanley Carter aka Sin-Eater, could appear in Matt’s next solo adventure.
