What 2021's Movie Release Slate Looks Like Now

A flurry of release date changes and delays has shaken up the 2020 movie slate, and here's what the 2021 movie release schedule looks like now. Coronavirus has been at the forefront of everyone's minds for the last few weeks, and the disease has had a profound impact on the movie industry. Theaters are shut down in several countries around the world and will likely continue to remain closed for several more weeks (if not months), while most productions have been halted as well.

It didn't take long for the 2020 movie calendar to be altered because of these circumstances. Films like No Time to Die and Wonder Woman 1984 vacated early summer release dates and planted their flags in new fall/winter slots instead. But, many other titles were postponed indefinitely. This list includes some of the most anticipated films of 2020, with Black Widow, Mulan, A Quiet Place Part II, and others now without release dates. Although the hope is that most of these titles can still come out in a re-arranged 2020 slate, several studios have already decided to push their big 2020 releases an entire year.

Next year's movie release slate was already highly anticipated, given the number of franchise movies releasing in 2021, and the list has continued to grow because of the coronavirus-related delays. However, multiple 2021 films might not hit their intended release dates either since productions are shut down. For now, here's what the 2021 movie slate looks like.

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway - January 15

Sony's Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway is the rare case of a film being delayed twice due to coronavirus. After leaving its April 2020 release and moving to August, the studio recently decided to postpone the sequel another few months. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway is now slated to release on January 15, 2021 and features the returns of Rose Byrne, Domnhall Gleeson, and the voice of James Corden.

    Mortal Kombat - January 15

The James Wan produced Mortal Kombat reboot has yet to be affected by coronavirus. Production began and ended in 2019, which now means the film should be able to move forward as planned if various aspects of post-production can be done by crews remotely. One of the producers of the film recently verified that the status of Mortal Kombat has not changed so far, so it is still scheduled to release on January 15.

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings - February 12

Marvel Studios' plans to release Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on February 12, 2021 have not changed yet. After beginning production in Australia in early 2020, all filming has come to a halt. Initially, the production was shut down as director Destin Daniel Cretton had a precautionary COVID-19 test, which came back negative. Still, Shang-Chi was among a group of Disney titles that were no longer allowed to continue filming. It's currently scheduled to come out in February 2021, but that might change if production can't resume soon enough or if the entirety of Phase 4 shuffles.

    Ghostbusters: Afterlife - March 5

Instead of opening in the summer of 2020, Sony has pushed Ghostbusters: Afterlife to March 5, 2021. Directed by Jason Reitman, the film picks up decades after Ghostbusters 2 and will feature many of the original Ghostbusters cast members in smaller roles. The film stars Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, and Paul Rudd otherwise, and the new release date gives Reitman more time to fine-tune the film in post-production.

    Morbius - March 19

Sony has also opted to push Morbius back several months, with a March 19, 2021 release now planned. The Jared Leto-led Marvel movie initially was set to be one of the final blockbusters of the summer season this year. But, instead of waiting a bit longer to see late July would still be a viable release date or moving the film back just a few months, Sony is playing it safe with Morbius and many other titles with this long delay.

    Tomb Raider 2 - March 19

The delay of Morbius currently means that it will open opposite a franchise that is already established, as Tomb Raider 2 is scheduled for March 19, 2021 as well. Alicia Vikander will return to star as Lara Croft in the sequel with Ben Wheatley attached to direct. Tomb Raider 2 has yet to start production, and there have been no reports that it will be impacted by coronavirus. But, since filming was reportedly set to begin in early 2020, its possible Tomb Raider 2 won't hit this date after all.

    F9 - April 2

Universal's handling of F9's release represents the most drastic change to date. The film was originally scheduled to open in April 2020, but the studio opted to push the release back an entire year due to coronavirus. Since F9's marketing campaign had already begun, this year-long delay will just give director Justin Lin more time to finish the film. But, this delay also meant that F9 took the April 4, 2021 release date previously set for Fast & Furious 10.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness - May 7

Marvel Studios is currently expecting that coronavirus will not mark another change to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With Sam Raimi reportedly attached to direct, Doctor Strange 2 is scheduled to begin production this summer and still hit the May 7, 2021 release date. Benedict Cumberbatch is back to star as Doctor Strange with Elizabeth Olsen returning as Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch. The production and release plans could still change, but that has yet to happen.

    The Matrix 4 - May 21

Warner Bros. has yet to change The Matrix 4's release date, but it might not be released on May 21, 2021 after all. Production began early this year with Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II reporting for duty, but filming is now paused. The Matrix 4 was just beginning to shoot overseas when production shut down, and there have been reports that it is in danger of having its release delayed. The longer production can't move forward, and the more likely Neo's return in The Matrix 4 will be delayed.

    John Wick: Chapter 4 - May 21

Lionsgate's hopes of John Wick: Chapter 4 releasing on May 21, 2021 appear more far-fetched than ever before. The likelihood of the film hitting this release was already questionable after The Matrix 4 announced the same release date, but Keanu Reeves' delayed schedule on that film will impact John Wick 4, too. Since he can't begin filming the latest John Wick film until after his Matrix return is completed, the latter's delayed production because of coronavirus will likely result in a release date change at some point.

    Cruella - May 28

Disney should have no trouble keeping Cruella's May 28, 2021 release date. The film, starring Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil, was originally going to come out in late 2020, but it was then moved to the summer of 2021 instead. With production completed long ago, Cruella has a clear path to maintaining this release date - unless Disney's entire slate changes.

    Micronauts - June 4

Hasbro's live-action Micronauts movie is currently scheduled to release on June 4, 2021. Paramount hired How to Train Your Dragon's Dean DeBlois to direct the film, but there have been no updates on the project since. At this time, Micronauts will be released in June 2021. Whether or not it has ties to a larger Hasbro shared universe though remains to be seen.

Jurassic World: Dominion - June 11

Jurassic World: Dominion is scheduled to make a big return on June 11, 2021. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are back to star, while franchise veterans Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laura Dern are also confirmed to return. Production was shut down due to coronavirus just a few weeks after it began. Still, director Colin Trevorrow has maintained that they're doing what they can to work remotely and keep Jurassic World 3 on track.

    Untitled Pixar - June 18

An untitled Pixar movie is scheduled to come out on June 18, 2021, but there is no information on what the project is yet. Since animated movies take years to make, a lot of progress has likely been made on this mystery film already. With Pixar releasing Soul in 2020, news on what their next movie will be hopefully isn't too far away.

    The Batman - June 25

Warner Bros.' highly anticipated The Batman reboot starring Robert Pattinson is scheduled to release on June 25, 2021. Production on the Matt Reeves film started in early 2020, and it wasn't long before the director shared the first look at Pattinson in the Batsuit. But, with filming currently halted due to coronavirus, it is possible that The Batman won't hit its current release date. Since no change has been announced yet, the official stance is that fans will see the Dark Knight in theaters again next summer.

Minions: The Rise Of Gru - July 2

After removing Minions: The Rise of Gru from its July 2020 release date, Illumination has moved the film to 2021. The new date for the sequel is July 2, 2021, putting the film in theaters almost exactly a year after its original date. This comes after Illumination revealed that the animation would not be able to be finished due to coronavirus. Now, there should be plenty of time to get Minions 2 ready for theaters.

    Indiana Jones 5 - July 9

Lucasfilm and Disney still have Indiana Jones 5 set to release on July 9, 2021. The sequel has been in development for years and recently saw Steven Spielberg exit the director's chair in a surprising move. Even with James Mangold now directing Indiana Jones 5, the film has yet to be moved off its summer 2021 date. So unless a delay announcement comes later on, Harrison Ford's return as Indy will happen next year.

    Spider-Man 3 - July 16

Marvel Studios and Sony have their Spider-Man franchise scheduled to return to theaters on July 16, 2021. The untitled Spider-Man 3 movie starring Tom Holland is still adding to its crew and might be on track to film this summer as originally planned. A production delay is still possible, but it is currently expected that fans will get to see what happens to Peter Parker after Spider-Man: Far From Home's ending next year.

    Space Jam 2 - July 16

Warner Bros. has Space Jam 2 set for release on July 16, 2021 with LeBron James attached to star. Production happened in 2019 before the NBA 2019-2020 season began, but it is unknown if James was scheduled to do more work on the film this summer. With the NBA season paused, James' basketball schedule could be drastically different than anticipated. Whether or not that impacts Space Jam 2's release remains to be seen.

    Mission: Impossible 7 - July 23

Tom Cruise is scheduled to return as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible 7 on July 23, 2021. The sequel also stars Rebecca Ferguson and franchise newcomers like Hayley Atwell and Nicholas Hoult. However, production has been shut down due to coronavirus. The film is scheduled to film throughout Europe, which has proven to be complicated. Paramount hasn't delayed Mission: Impossible 7 (or Mission: Impossible 8) at this time, although that is a possibility if production doesn't resume promptly.

The Suicide Squad - August 6

James Gunn's jump to DC will be seen when The Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 6, 2021. Production began in 2019 and wrapped in early 2020, giving Gunn and his crew plenty of time to complete post-production by next August. He's even editing The Suicide Squad from his home to keep production on track. The cast includes the returns of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney, along with new additions like John Cena and Idris Elba. But, if other DC properties aren't ready earlier, it is possible The Suicide Squad could be prepared to move up instead.

    Uncharted - October 8

Tom Holland's Uncharted movie hit another snag due to coronavirus and has been pushed back to later in 2021 as a result. Production was stopped on the first day Holland reported to set, and Sony's 2020 slate moving meant Uncharted had to move too. The film is now scheduled to hit theaters October 8, 2021 with Mark Wahlberg attached to co-star and Ruben Fleischer directing, but it has yet to be revealed when production will resume.

    Halloween Ends - October 15

Blumhouse's revival of the Halloween franchise will conclude with the release of Halloween Ends on October 15, 2021. The film was shot back-to-back with Halloween Kills, so director David Gordon Green shouldn't have a problem hitting this release date. As long as Kills isn't delayed later on, Jamie Lee Curtis' multiple film return as Laurie Strode will remain on track.

Thor: Love And Thunder - November 5

Marvel Studios has Thor: Love and Thunder scheduled to hit theaters on November 5, 2021. There has yet to be any signs that the movie's production will be delayed, as filming won't begin until later this year. But, it is possible Thor: Love and Thunder won't hit this date if Phase 4's entire slate changes. The Taika Waititi-directed sequel will feature the return of Chris Hemsworth's Thor, Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie, and Natalie Portman's Jane Foster, along with the new addition of Christian Bale as an unknown villain.

    Fantastic Beasts 3 - November 12

Warner Bros. will return to the Wizarding World with Fantastic Beasts 3 when it is released on November 12, 2021. The film was originally scheduled to hit theaters in 2020, but WB delayed the movie until 2021 to give the creative team more time to perfect the film. However, now coronavirus is impacting the film as the start of production was delayed. WB has yet to announce that the delay will change Fantastic Beasts 3's release date, but that could become a possibility depending on how long they must wait for cameras to start rolling.

    Dungeons & Dragons - November 19

Dungeons and Dragons is scheduled to come to the big screen on November 19, 2021. The popular role-playing game is being adapted by Game Night directors John Francis Daley and Johnathan Goldstein, but it does not yet have any cast members. It is unknown when production is scheduled to begin on Dungeons and Dragons. However, there have been no reports that the film is in danger of being delayed due to coronavirus.

    Avatar 2 - December 17

The wait for Avatar 2 will finally end when the film hits theaters on December 17, 2021. James Cameron has been developing the first of four sequels to Avatar for almost a decade, and the plan is for Disney to release the first installment next year. The physical productions of the films have been delayed due to coronavirus, but virtual production is continuing during this time. It would appear that Avatar 2 will not need to be delayed (again).

    Sing 2 - December 22

Illumination has changed Sing 2's release date yet again, with the sequel now hitting theaters December 22, 2021. The sequel to 2016's hit movie Sing will once again feature the vocal performances of Taron Egerton, Matthew McConaughey, Scarlett Johansson, and Reese Witherspoon. Originally scheduled to release in December 2020, Illumination moved Sing 2 to July 2, 2021 long before coronavirus. Now, the film has been delayed again to accommodate Minions 2's new date.

    Black Adam - December 22

Dwayne Johnson's long-awaited DC debut as Black Adam is scheduled to happen on December 22, 2021 with the release of Black Adam. He's been attached to play the anti-hero for several years and has been gearing up for production to begin this summer. But, Johnson has expressed some worry that this might not be able to happen anymore due to coronavirus and delays to other projects he needs to finish first. So, there is a chance that Black Adam will not make this date, but hopefully it can avoid being delayed.

Very much enjoyed this. Thank you @Rhialto.

Is it bad I'm actually looking forward to Mortal Kombat?
