It was a virtual tie atop the box office, but most new releases struggled during the Halloween weekend.

In at number 1 (for now) is Nightcrawler (read our review) with $10.9 million. For a movie this dark many are counting Nightcrawler’s debut as a win, even though $10 million is nothing to write home about.

That being said, the film did receive mostly positive reviews and it features Jake Gyllenhaal playing against type. Could that be enough to give the film a deep run?

Literally right behind Nightcrawler is Ouija with $10.9 million. It’s no surprise to see a horror film take one of the top spots during Halloween weekend, but having the holiday fall on a Friday may have hurt Ouija a little bit. The film is now up to $34 million.

Coming in at number 3 is Fury with $9.1 million. The Brad Pitt war drama is now up to $60 million.

Gone Girl comes in at number 4 with $8.8 million. The David Fincher-directed, Ben Affleck-led adaptation is now up to $136 million. The film is already David Fincher’s highest grossing release and it will soon pass Ben Affleck’s Argo ($136M).

Rounding out top 5 is The Book of Life with $8.3 million. The animated film has done decent business, but $40 million after three weeks is far less than the average release in the genre.

In at number 6 is John Wick with $8 million. We thought that word of mouth might help carry this Keanu Reeves action flick, but a 44% drop from last week is an average decline. There is still a chance for a John Wick sequel, but the first film’s performance might make that a little difficult.

St. Vincent is in at number 7 is $7.7 million. The indie comedy bumped up its theater count by a slight margin and saw an increase in grosses as a result. So far St. Vincent has earned a very solid $19 million domestic.

Coming in at number 8 is Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day with $6.4 million. The family friendly comedy is now up to $53 million after four weeks.

The number 9 film is The Judge with $3.4 million. Robert Downey Jr’s latest drama is up to $39 million after four weeks and will likely bow out of the top 10.

Rounding out the top 10 is Dracula Untold with $2.9 million. It’s well short of its $70 million budget, but Dracula Untold has grossed $52 million.

Outside the top 10: the Saw 10th Anniversary re-release opened with a hugely disappointing $650,000 on 2,063 screens for a per-screen-average of $315; Horns (read our review) debuted to a paltry $104,000 on 103 screens; and Before I Go to Sleep (read our review) grossed $2 million.
