'Escape Room,' a $9 million thriller, is the only new wide release this weekend.

With no new major Hollywood studio releases, the post-New Year's box office will be relatively quiet this weekend.

Warner Bros.' Aquaman will easily stay No. 1 in its third weekend with an estimated $25 million-plus domestically as it passes the $900 million mark globally. The superhero pic's total through Thursday was $866 million, including $229 million in North America and $637 million overseas.

Directed by James Wan and starring Jason Momoa, the tentpole has now passed up Wonder Woman ($821.8 million). Sometime today, it will eclipse Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($873.6 million) to become the highest-grossing DC pic since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012, not adjusted for inflation.

Disney's Mary Poppins Returns is projected to gross $17 million-$20 million in its third weekend for a domestic total through Sunday of $140 million or more. Overseas, the Rob Marshall-directed musical is singing past the $100 million mark.

The only new wide release this weekend is Sony's PG-13 thriller Escape Room. The film, costing a modest $9 million to produce, earned $2.3 million in Thursday previews for a projected domestic debut of $15 million, good enough for a third-place finish.

Directed by Adam Robitel, Escape Room follows six strangers who find themselves in immersive escape rooms containing deadly traps.

Paramount's Bumblebee and Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will round out the top five, followed by Annapurna's Vice.

Mary Poppins Returns and Vice are among the movies vying for top awards during Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony. Winners that are still in the heart of their runs should see a box office boost.
