David Hasselhoff backs up James Gunn after the filmmaker was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after old, crude social media posts were unearthed. Shortly after the House of Mouse's verdict was announced, Gunn issued an official statement and has since then remained silent on the matter. That said, the issue remains to be the talk of the town with the former Baywatch actor the latest high-profile celebrity speaking up about the controversy. Hasselhoff briefly appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and was also the main star of the 1970s-style music video for the sequel's special song titled "Guardians Inferno."

Marvel Studios has yet to address the situation, and it's currently unclear what will happen to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which Gunn was supposed to both write and direct. Initial reports claim that Disney may be looking to reinstate the director, but latest rumors suggest that the House of Mouse doesn't have any intentions of rehiring him. Fans have also launched an online petition for Gunn's rehiring, although based on similar campaigns' success rate, it's dubious if it's going to make a significant effect on Disney's decision.

Taking it to his official Twitter account to greet Gunn a happy birthday, Hasselhoff also subtly made it clear that he is standing by the director's side amidst the controversy surrounding his old tweets. While he's a little bit late chiming on the issue, his voice of support for Gunn was welcomed by strong supporters of the filmmaker nonetheless. Check out the actor's tweet below:

Hasselhoff is the latest Guardians of the Galaxy star to publicly support Gunn. His comments followed an official statement rolled out by the lead cast of the Marvel Studios subseries siding with the filmmaker while also requesting for his reinstatement, as well as a separate statement from veteran actor Kurt Russel, who worked with Gunn in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Meanwhile, Gunn's peers and other industry people have also expressed their support for the director, citing that over the last several years of his life, Gunn has committed himself to change for the better. Gunn's biggest defender, however, is Dave Bautista, who even recently said that he'll quit the franchise if they don't use the director's script.

If anything, multiple actors standing up with Gunn could be an indication that Disney's decision to swiftly fire him was a knee-jerk reaction, especially considering that not too long ago, they did a similar thing to Roseanne Barr after the actress' racist tweets. The problem, however, is that these two instances cannot be any more different. Barr's offensive comments were not only done around the same time her whole scandal blew up, she's also mostly standing by them. Gunn's horrible tweets, on the other hand, are nearly 10 years old, with the director previously apologizing for them years before the first Guardians of the Galaxy came out in 2014, and again immediately before and after he was fired.
