You gotta hand it to Angelina Jolie. The woman sure does the unexpected. Her directorial debut, 2011′s “In the Land of Blood and Honey” was about the Bosnian War, and now she’s followed that up with the true World War II story of Louie Zamperini in “Unbroken.” You gotta figure she had a lot of easier, safer choices, but nope, she decides to do these two movies. Of course, “Unbroken’s” got that whole inspirational true story thing going for it, and should win plenty of awards come awards season, so that never hurts.

Here’s your first look at footage from the movie, courtesy of NBC’s Sochi Olympics preview. It looks pretty good, if you like prison camp movies. I’m not a big fan of them myself, but I’ve been known to watch one or two (or a dozen).

Academy Award® winner Angelina Jolie directs and produces Unbroken, an epic drama that follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand’s (“Seabiscuit: An American Legend”) enormously popular book, Unbroken brings to the big screen Zamperini’s unbelievable and inspiring true story about the resilient power of the human spirit.

Starring Jack O’Connell, Domhnall Gleeson, Garrett Hedlund, Finn Wittrock, John Magaro, Alex Russell, and Miyavi.

Not breaking this Christmas Day 2014.
